@#@Molddesignisaknowledge-intensiveprocess.Thispaperdescribesaknowledge-basedoriented,parametric,modularandfeature-basedintegratedcomputer-aideddesign/computer-aidedengineering(CAD/CAE)systemformolddesign.DevelopmentofCAxsystemsfornumericalsimulationofplasticinjectionmoldingandmolddesignhasopenednewpossibilitiesofproductanalysisduringthemolddesign.TheproposedsystemintegratesPro/ENGINEERsystemwiththespeciallydevelopedmoduleforthecalculationofinjectionmoldingparameters,molddesign,andselectionofmoldelements.ThesysteminterfaceusesparametricandCAD/CAEfeature-baseddatabasetostreamlinetheprocessofdesign,editing,andreviewing.AlsopresentedaregeneralstructureandpartofoutputresultsfromtheproposedCAD/@#@CAE-integratedinjectionmolddesignsystem.@#@Keywords @#@Molddesign.Numericalsimulation.CAD.CAE@#@1Introduction@#@Injectionmoldingprocessisthemostcommonmoldingprocessformakingplasticparts.Generally,plasticinjectionmoldingdesignincludesplasticproductdesign,molddesign,andinjectionmoldingprocessdesign,allofwhichcontributetothequalityofthemoldedproductaswellasproductionefficiency[1].Thisisprocessinvolvingmanydesignparametersthatneedtobeconsideredinaconcurrentmanner.Molddesignforplasticinjectionmoldingaidedbycomputershasbeenfocusedbyanumberofauthorsworldwideforalongperiod.Variousauthorshavedevelopedprogramsystemswhichhelpengineerstodesignpart,mold,andselectionparametersofinjectionmolding.Duringthelastdecade,manyauthorshavedevelopedcomputer-aideddesign/computer-aidedengineering(CAD/CAE)molddesignsystemsforplasticinjectionmolding.Jongetal.[2]developedacollaborativeintegrateddesignsystemforconcurrentmolddesignwithintheCADmoldbaseontheweb,usingPro/E.Lowetal.[3]developedanapplicationforstandardizationofinitialdesignofplasticinjectionmolds.Thesystemenableschoiceandmanagementofmoldbaseofstandardmoldplates,butdoesnotprovidemoldandinjectionmoldingcalculations.Theauthorsproposedamethodologyofstandardizingthecavitylayoutdesignsystemforplasticinjectionmoldsuchthatonlystandardcavitylayoutsareused.Whenstandardlayoutsareused,theirlayoutconfigurationscanbeeasilystoredinadatabase.Linatal.[4,5]describeastructuraldesignsystemfor3Ddrawingmoldbasedonfunctionalfeaturesusingaminimumsetofinitialinformation.Inaddition,itisalsoapplicabletoassignthefunctionalfeaturesflexiblybeforeaccomplishingthedesignofasolidmodelforthemainpartsofadrawingmold.Thisdesignsystemincludesmodulesforselectionandcalculationofmoldcomponents.ItusesPro/EmodulesPro/ProgramandPro/Toolkit,andconsistsofmodulesformoldselection,modificationanddesign.Dengetal.[6,7]analyzeddevelopmentoftheCAD/CAEintegration.TheauthorsalsoanalyzedsystemsandproblemsofintegrationbetweenCADandCAEsystemsfornumericalsimulationofinjectionmoldingandmolddesign.AuthorsproposeafeatureontologyconsistingofanumberofCAD/CAEfeatures.Thisfeaturerepresentsnotonlythegeometricinformationofplasticpart,butalsothedesignintentisorientedtowardsanalysis.Partfeaturescontaintheoverallproductinformationofaplasticpart,wallfeatures,developmentfeatures(suchaschamfer,ribs,boss,hole,etc.),treatmentfeatureswhichcontainanalysis-relateddesigninformationandsubwalldevelopedfeatures.Wallanddevelopmentfeaturesaresocalled“componentfeatures”.Godecetal.[8,9]developedaCAEsystemformolddesignandinjectionmoldingparameterscalculations.Thesystemisbasedonmorphologymatrixanddecisiondiagrams.Thesystemisusedforthermal,rheologicalandmechanicalcalculation,andmaterialbasemanagement,@#@ @#@@#@butnointegrationwithcommercialCAxsoftwareisprovided.Huangetal.[10]developedamold-basedesignsystemforinjectionmolding.Thedatabasetheyusedwasparametricandfeature-basedoriented.ThesystemusedPro/Eformodelingdatabasecomponents.Kongetal.[11]developedaparametric3Dplasticinjectionmolddesignsystemintegratedwithsolidworks.Otherknowledge-basedsystems,suchasIMOLD,ESMOLD,IKMOULD,andIKBMOULD,havebeendevelopedforinjectionmolddesign.IMOLDdividesmolddesignintofourmajorsteps;@#@partingsurfacedesign,impressiondesign,runnersystemdesign,andmold-basedesign.Thesoftwareusesaknowledge-basedCADsystemtoprovideaninteractiveenvironment,assistdesignersintherapidcompletionofmolddesign,andpromotethestandardizationofthemolddesignprocess.IKB-MOULDapplicationconsistsofdatabasesandknowledgebasesformoldmanufacturing.Louetal.[12]developedanintegratedknowledge-basedsystemformoldbasedesign.Thesystemhasmoduleforimpressioncalculation,dimensioncalculation,calculationofthenumberofmoldplatesandselectionofinjectionmachine.ThesystemusesPro/MoldBaselibrary.ThispaperdescribesKBSandkeytechnologies,suchasproductmodeling,theframe-rulemethod,CBS, @#@andtheneuralnetworks.AmultilayerneuralnetworkhasbeentrainedbybackpropagationBP.Thisneuralnetworkadoptslength,width,heightandthenumberofpartsinthemoldasinputandnineparameters(length,width,andheightofupanddownset-in,moldbasessidethickness,bottomthicknessofthecore,andcavityplates)asoutput.Moketal.[13,14]developedanintelligentcollaborativeKBSforinjectionmolds.Mokatel.[15]hasdevelopedaneffectivereuseandretrievalsystemthatcanregistermodeledstandardpartsusingasimplegraphicaluserinterfaceeventhoughdesignersmaynotknowtherulesofregistrationforadatabase.ThemolddesignsystemwasdevelopedusinganOpenAPIandcommercialCAD/computeraidedmanufacturing(CAM)/CAEsolution.ThesystemwasappliedtostandardizemoldbasesandmoldpartsinHyundaiHeavyIndustry.Thissystemadoptedthemethodofdesignediting,whichimplementsthemastermodelusingfeatures.Thedevelopedsystemprovidesmethodswherebydesignerscanregisterthemastermodel,whichisdefinedasafunctionof3DCAD,asstandardpartsandeffectivelyreusestandardpartseventhoughtheydonotrecognizetherulesofthedatabase.@#@Todicetal.[16]developedasoftwaresolutionforautomatedprocessplanningformanufacturingofplasticinjectionmolds.ThisCAD/CAPP/CAMsystemdoesnotprovideCAEcalculationofparametersofinjectionmoldingandmolddesign.Maicanetal.[17]usedCAEformechanical,thermal,andrheologicalcalculations.Theyanalyzedphysical,mechanical,andthermalpropertiesofplasticmaterials.Theydefinedthecriticalparametersofloadedpart.Nardinetal.[18]triedtodevelopthesystemwhichwouldsuitalltheneedsoftheinjectionmoldingforselectionofthepart–mold–technologysystem.Thesimulationresultsconsistofgeometricalandmanufacturingdata.Onthebasisofthesimulationresults,partdesignerscanoptimizepartgeometry,whilemolddesignerscanoptimizetherunningandthecoolingsystemofthemold.Theauthorsdevelopedaprogramwhichhelpstheprogrammersoftheinjectionmoldingmachinetotransfersimulationdatadirectlytothemachine.Zhouetal.[1]developedavirtualinjectionmoldingsystembasedonnumericalsimulation.Maetal.[19]developedstandardcomponentlibraryforplasticinjectionmolddesignusinganobject-orientedapproach.Thisisanobjectoriented,librarymodelfordefiningmechanicalcomponentsparametrically.Theydevelopedanobject-orientedmoldcomponentlibrarymodelforincorporatingdifferentgeometrictopologiesandnon-geometricinformation.Overtheyears,manyresearchershaveattemptedtoautomateawhole@#@ @#@@#@Fig.3Formstodefinethemoldgeometry@#@molddesignprocessusingvariousknowledge-basedengineering(KBE)approaches,suchasrule-basedreasoning(RBR),andcasebase(CBR)andparametricdesigntemplate(PDT).Chanatal.[20]developeda3DCADknowledge-basedassistedinjectionmolddesignsystem(IKBmold).Intheirresearch,designrulesandexpertknowledgeofmolddesignwereobtainedfromexperiencedmolddesignersandhandbooksthroughvarioustraditionalknowledgeacquisitionprocesses.ThetraditionalKBEapproaches,suchasRBR,CBR,andsimplePDThavebeensuccessfullyappliedtomoldcavityandrunnerlayoutdesignautomationoftheoneproductmold.@#@Yeetal.[21]proposedafeature-basedandobject-orientedhierarchicalrepresentationandsimplifiedsymbolicgeometryapproachforautomationmoldassemblymodeling.Thepreviouslymentionedanalysisofvarioussystemsshowsthatauthorsuseddifferentwaystosolvetheproblemsofmolddesignbyreducingittomoldconfigureator(selector).TheyusedCAD/CAEintegrationforcreatingprecisionrulesformold-baseselection.ManyauthorsusedCAEsystemfornumericalsimulationofinjectionmoldingtodefineparametersofinjectionmolding.SeveralalsodevelopedoriginalCAEmodulesformoldandinjectionmoldingprocesscalculation.However,commontoallpreviouslymentionedsystemsisthelackofmoduleforcalculationofmoldandinjectionmoldingparameterswhichwouldallowintegrationwiththeresultsofnumericalsimulation.Thisleadstoconclusionthatthereisaneedtocreateasoftwaresystemwhichintegratesparametersofinjectionmoldingwiththeresultobtainedbynumerical@#@ @#@@#@ @#@F
