Around21%saidtheywantedtobesportsmenorsportswomen,followedby11%wantingtobeteachers,and7%wantingtobevets.Another6%wantedtoworkinsocialmediaandgaming.Thiswasasignthattherehadbeen“ashiftintheaspirationsofchildren,builtlargelyuponnewcommunicationmethodsandthegrowthofonlineandconsole-basedgaming”.
“Formoreandmorechildrenandyoungpeople,onlinecelebritiesandYouTubegaming‘vloggers’havetakentheplaceofTVandmoviestars,”thereportsaid.Socialmediaandgamingisthefourthmostpopularcareerchoiceforchildren,whilesinger/musicianandactor/actressfurtherdownthelistatninthandthirteenth.
“ItcouldbearguedthatthisisduetothegrowingfameandattractionofYouTubeandvideobloggingstars,whoareespeciallypopularamongyoungeraudience.”Also,thesechoicesmayalsospeaktochildren'
spresentworlds.Manyseventoeleven-year-oldswillspendtheirtimegamingandperhapssimultaneouslywatchingcelebritygamingbloggersinstructingthemhowtodoit.
Thesurveyfoundthat5%ofchildrenwhotookpartwantedtobeinthepolice,withthesameproportionplanningonbecomingdoctors.Agenderbreakdownshowsthetopjobchoiceforgirlswasteacher(19%),followedbyvet(11%)andsportswoman(9%),whileforboysitwassportsman(34%)followedbysocialmediaandgaming(9%)andpolice(8%).
Thishighlightsthepressingneedforclosertiesbetweenemployersandschools,tomakesurethatallchildrenhaveaccesstorolemodelsinawiderangeofsectorstohelpthemdevelopanawarenessofcareeroptionsatanearlyage.“Thisisimportanttoensurethatallchildren—regardlessofgenderandbackgrounds—canfulfilltheirfullpotential.”
