DanHaydon,oftheUniversityofGlasgow,andhiscolleaguesbelievethatconservationbiologistsshouldthinkdifferently.Withtheexceptionofhumans,speciesareimportantbutindividualsarenot.Someoutbreaksofdiseasecanbetolerated.InapaperpublishedthisweekinNature,theyrecastthemathematicsofvaccinationwiththisinmind.
Onepidemiologists'
standardassumptionthateveryindividualcounts,vaccinationprogrammesareintendedtopreventepidemicsbyensuringthateachinfectedanimal,onaverage,passesthediseaseontolessthanonehealthyanimal.Thisimpliesthataroundtwo-thirdsofallthewolveswouldneedtobevaccinated.Aprogrammethatsoughttosaveaspeciesratherthanindividualswouldalloweachinfectedwolftopassthediseaseontomorethanonehealthyanimalandhencerequirefewervaccinations.DrHaydonandhiscolleagueshavecalculated,usingdatafromarabiesoutbreakin2003,thatvaccinatingbetween10%and25%wouldsuffice,providedveterinariansgavejabstothosewolveslivinginthenarrowvalleysthatconnectthesubpopulations.
