Americaisnew,orlikestoassertthatnotion.Americansoftenthinkofthemselvesasapeopleofthefuturewhosepersonalpastscanbeovercomeorreinvented,eveniftheywillvolunteeruponthefirstmeetingwithanystrangerthattheirfamiliescamefromIreland,fromGermany,fromVietnam,orfromelsewhereoutsidetheUS.Thekeywordis“from”–asin,theOldWorldisagoodplacetobe“from.”WithAmericans,itistherighthereandrightnowthathastheirattention.Theyseemtocaremoreaboutthefutureandofwhatcouldbecome.MostAmericansseethemselvesasrisk-takerswhograspatchancestogetanewlifeforthemselvesandtheirchildren.Sometimesthatmeansleavingfamilyandnationaltiesbehindtocrossanoceanoracontinent.Americansimaginethemselvesandtheircountryinmanyways;butwhenlookingintoamirror,theyarelikelytoseethereflectedimageofadreamthatbegannotsolongago.
MuchofwhathashappenedinthehistoryoftheUnitedStatesisbasedupontheEuropeanimaginationofaNewWorld.EuropeansimaginedAmericabeforetheydiscovereditand,intheyearssincediscoveringit,theyhavebeentryingtodefinewhatitisthatmakesitdifferent.ChristopherColumbusneverunderstoodthathehadlocatedanewcontinentorcontinentsin1492,butdiedsteadfastly(踏实地,不变地)believingthathewassomewhereineasternAsia.OthersspokeofthediscoveryofanAtlantis,alostcontinentthathadlongfilledtheEuropeanimagination.Inthesixteenthcentury,explorersfrommanynations–someusinganewmap,Amerika,namedfortheItalianexplorerAmerigoVespucci–canvassed(彻查)thecoastoftheNewWorld,sailingintoinlets,collectingsouvenirs,andbeingastonishedatwhattheydidordidnotfindthere.

Theideaofbuildingsomethingnewonnewland,ofhavingthefreedomtodoso,oflookingtowardthefutureandnotthepast,ofacceptingtheprogressofchangeoverthestasis(停滞)ofcontinuity,andofindividualrebirth/recreation,inspiredEuropeanadventurersandbecamethestoryoftheAmericanpeople.DuringtheAgeofDiscovery,Europeanstriedtodefinethedreamthatmightbe;duringtheAgeofReason,philosopherJohnLockemadewhathasproventobealong-lastingappealtoinnocence:
“inthebeginning,alltheworldwasAmerica.”
