Huntingtonbeganhisthinkingbysurveyingthediversetheoriesaboutthenatureofglobalpoliticsinthepost-ColdWarperiod.Sometheoristsandwritersarguedthat
humanrights,
liberaldemocracy
andcapitalistfreemarketeconomyhadbecometheonlyremainingideologicalalternativefornationsinthepost-ColdWarworld.Specifically,
FrancisFukuyama
arguedthattheworldhadreachedthe'
endofhistory'
inaHegelian
sense.
Huntingtonbelievedthatwhiletheageof
ideology
hadended,theworldhadonlyrevertedtoanormalstateofaffairscharacterizedbyculturalconflict.Inhisthesis,hearguedthattheprimaryaxisofconflictinthefuturewillbealongculturalandreligiouslines.
Asanextension,hepositsthattheconceptofdifferent
civilizations,asthehighestrankofculturalidentity,willbecomeincreasinglyusefulinanalyzingthepotentialforconflict.

Itismyhypothesisthatthefundamentalsourceofconflictinthisnewworldwillnotbeprimarilyideologicalorprimarilyeconomic.Thegreatdivisionsamonghumankindandthedominatingsourceofconflictwillbecultural.Nationstateswillremainthemostpowerfulactorsinworldaffairs,buttheprincipalconflictsofglobalpoliticswilloccurbetweennationsandgroupsofdifferentcivilizations.Theclashofcivilizationswilldominateglobalpolitics.Thefaultlinesbetweencivilizationswillbethebattlelinesofthefuture.[2]
