Inthepastdecadethepopularityofrockclimbinghasgreatlyincreased,andsohasthenumberofinjuries.Ithasbeenestimatedthatrockclimbingisnowenjoyedbymorethan9millionpeopleintheUSeachyear.Studyfindingsrevealeda65%increaseinthenumberofpatientsthatweretreatedinUSemergencydepartmentsforrockclimbing-relatedinjuriesbetween1991and2012.

Thestudy,publishedintheonlineissueoftheAmericanJournalofPreventiveMedicine,foundthatabout40,000patientsweretreatedinUSemergencydepartmentsforrockclimbing-relatedinjuriesbetween1991and2012.Themostcommontypesofrockclimbing–relatedinjurieswerefractures（骨折）andsprains（扭伤）.Theanklewasthemostcommonbodyparttobeinjured（40%）.Climbersinthestudyrangedinagefrom2to74,withanaverageageof26.Thestudyalsofoundthatwomentookupaquarteroftheinjuries.

Fallsweretheprimaryreasonforinjurywithoverthree-quartersoftheinjuriesoccurringastheresultofafall.Theseverityoffall-relatedinjurieshadalottodowiththeheightofthefall.Patientswhowereinjuredafterfallingfromaheightover20feetwere10timesmorelikelytobetreatedthanpatientswhowereinjuredfallingfrom20feetorlower.

“Wefoundthattheclimberswhofellfromheightshigherthan20feettookup70percentofthepatientstreatedforarockclimbing-relatedinjury,”explainedthestudyauthorLaraMcKenzie,PhD,directorattheCenterforInjuryResearchandPolicyatNationwideHospital.“Thistrend,combinedwiththefactthatrockclimbershaveahigherhospitalizationratethanothersportsandrecreationalinjuries,demonstratestheneedtoincreaseinjurypreventioneffortsforclimbers.”
