Theparticipantsin“WhyWePost”workedindependentlyfor15monthsatlocationsinBrazil,Britain,Chile,China(oneruralandoneindustrialsite),India,Italy,TrinidadandTobago,andTurkey.Theyburiedthemselveswithinfamiliesandtheirsurroundingcommunities.That,theteambelieves,letthemformasubtleviewoftherolesofsocialmediaintheirstudysiteswhichcouldnotbegainedbyanalysingparticipants’publicpostings.Theseby-standers’viewpointsdenymuchreceivedwisdom.Oneofthebiggestdoubtsisthe“selfie”-whichisoftenblamedforcausingself-regardandtoomuchfocusonattractiveness.“WhyWePost”,however,revealsthattheselfieitselfhasmanyfaces.InBrazilmanyselfiespostedbymenweretakenatthegym.ButattheBritishsite,DrMillerfound,schoolchildrenpostedfivetimesasmany“groupies”(imagesofthepicture-takerwithfriends)astheydidselfies.Britonshavealsocreatedacategorycalled“uglies”(曝丑照),ofwhichthepurposeistotakeasuglyaself-imageaspossible.
Theoften-humorous,marked-upimagesknownasmemeshavealsocomeinforcriticism.Theylowerdowntraditionalformsofpublicdebate,spreadingfarandwidewithlittlecontext.Butmemesservedifferentpurposesindifferentcultures.InIndiatheytendtofocusonseriousandreligiousissues;
