Thedanglingmodifier,apersistentandfrequentgrammaticalprobleminwriting,isoften(thoughnotalways)locatedatthebeginningofasentence.Adanglingmodifierisusuallyaphraseoranellipticalclause--adependentclausewhosesubjectandverbareimpliedratherthanexpressed--thatfunctionsasanadjectivebutdoesnotmodifyanyspecificwordinthesentence,or(worse)modifiesthewrongword.Considerthefollowingexample:
