Peoplehaveusedpigeonstocarrymessagestooneanotherforhundredsofyears.Infact,pigeonswereacommonwaytosendmessagesrightupthroughWorldWarⅡ.
In1815anEnglishbankernamedNathanRothschildmadehisfortunebyrelyingonmessagessenttohimbycarrierpigeons.EnglishtroopswerefightingNapoleon'
sforcesinFrance,andtheEnglishwerebelievedtobelosing.AfinancialpanicgrippedLondon.Governmentbondswereofferedatlowprices.FewpeoplenoticedthatRothschildwassnapping_upthesebondswheneveryoneelsewasdesperatelytryingtosellthem.Afewdayslater,Londonlearnedthetruth;
theDukeofWellingtonhaddefeatedNapoleonatthebattleofWaterloo.Thevalueofthebondswentup,andRothschildbecameextremelywealthy—allbecausehispigeonshadbroughthimnewsofthevictorybeforeanyoneelseknewofit.
Mostofthetime,however,carrierpigeonswereusedtobenefitanentirecountry,notjustoneindividual.TheUnitedStates,England,France,Germany,andItaly,inbothWorldWarⅠandWorldWarⅡ,usedcarrierpigeons.Notonlywerethebirdsoftenthefastest,mostreliablewaytosendmessages,theycouldalsobeusedtoreachsoldiersfarbehindenemylines,whereradiosandfieldtelephonelineswereuseless.Sincetheycouldeasilybereleasedfromairplanesorships,everybranchofthearmedservicesusedthebirds.InWorldWarⅡ,morethan3,000soldiersand150officerswereneededtocareforandtrainthetensofthousandsofbirdsintheUSPigeonService.
Carryingmessagescouldbeadangerousjob.Somepigeonsperformedwithsuchbraverythattheybecamefamousandwereevenawardedmedals,suchasEngland'
sDickenMedalofGallantry.Inafewcases,pigeonsevenbecameprisonersofwar.In1918AmericanforcescapturedapigeonnamedTheKaiser,whichhadbeentrainedtoflyspecialmissionsforGermanyduringbattle.HewastakentoAmerica,wherehelivedtotheageof32.
ThemostfamouspigeonofallmayhavebeenCherAmi.StationedinFranceduringWorldWarⅠ,hecarriedtwelveimportantmessagesforAmericanforces.Onhislastmission,thoughwounded,hecarriedamessagethatsavedthelivesof194Americansoldiers.Forhisex
traordinaryservice,hewasawardedtheFrench“CroixdeGuerre”.
Carrierpigeonsareaslightlydifferentbreedfromthekindofpigeonyouseeoncitystreets.Theyaremuchthinnerandtaller,withlongerlegs.Manypeoplefindcarrierpigeonsuglybecauseoftheirbigwattle,aknobbybuildupofskinonthebeak;
