Butsomepeople,especiallythosewhocannotaffordacar,arestuckwitheatingwhat’sreadilyavailable.Inthecaseoffooddeserts,it’susuallythetypeoffoodthatcanleadtoover-weight.Studieshaveshownthatthisislikelytobeaprobleminlow-incomeareas.Whenmoneyisnotenough,peopletendtobuyfoodsthatlastlongerandremovefoodwaste,whichisawasteoftheirlimitedincome.
Lackofaccessisonlyonepartoftheproblem,however.Astudypublishedin2018foundthatfoodinequalitywasn’tremoved.Thebiggerissuewaslikelythelackofeducationandnutritionalknowledgeinthesecommunities,whichpreventspeoplewithlowerincomesfromunderstandingthebenefitsofhealthyeating.
