In1855GovernorIsaacStevensofWashingtonTerritoryinvitedtheNezPercetoapeaceconference.Hesaidtherewereagreatmanywhitepeopleinthecountry,andmanymorewouldcome.ButtheChiefofthetribeatthattime,OldJoseph,replied,“Takeawayyourpaper.Iwillnottouchitwithmyhand.”
Thingswerequietforawhileafterthat,butnotforlong.WhenOldJosephdied,thechiefshipwaspassedontoYoungJoseph.Inthelate1870s,governmentofficialscametoordertheNezPercetoleavetheWallowaValleyandthenbeganhardbattlesbetweentheNezPerceandthewhitesoldiers.Afterthetribehadfoughtthirteenbattlesandmoved1,600milesto-wardsCanadainanattempttoretreat(撤退)north,YoungJoseph,gaveintotheUnitedStatesArmy.Herewashisfamousstatement,“Hearmemychiefs.Iamtired;
