第二部分讨论了小说中处于中心地位的英国文化与处于边缘地位的印度文化难以实现平等的交流;
第三部分主要讨论了英印之间不同的行为标准及双方在交往中产生的障碍;
第四部分主要讨论了小说中的三大宗教之间的差异,在小说中作者福斯特主要描写了三种宗教,它们分别是基督教,伊斯兰教和印度教,不同的宗教信仰使文化交流出现困难;
第五部分为结论部分,在总结全文的基础上,论文得出的结论是不平等的文化地位、不同的行为标准以及不同的宗教信仰决定了文化冲突在英国人和印度人之间存在的必然性。

Abstract
APassagetoIndiaisgenerallyacceptedbycriticsasthemostexcellentnovelofE.M.Forster.ThesettingofthenovelisIndiaintheearlytwentiethcenturywhenitwasaBritishcolony.ThenovelillustratesthesocialconflictsbetweentheIndiansandBritishandreflectstheculturaloppositionandclashbetweentheIndianandBritish.TherearemultipleprofilesofIndiainthenovel,notonlytheobjectivenarrativesofthehistoryofbeingcolonized,butalsothedirectandartisticstatementaboutthedifferenceamongHinduism,ChristianityandIslam.Themainresearchmethodisdocumentanalysis.Thefirststepiscollectingthedocumentsrelatedtothenovelandgettingtherelatedinformation;
thenextstepisreviewingcontentsofdocumentsandgettingthebasicelementsfortheresearch.Thelaststepiscompletingtheresearchbyanalyzingthenovel.Thepaperiscomposedoffiveparts,thefirstpartistointroduceresearchbackgroundandsignificanceofthestudy;
thesecondpartdiscussestheinequalityofculturalstatusinthenovel;

APassagetoIndiaisForster’sopuswhichillustratesthesocialconflictsinIndiacolonizedbyBritishandreflectstheculturaloppositionandclashbetweenIndianandBritish.ThenovelwastheresultofForster’stwotripstoIndia.During1912-1913,ForstervisitedIndiawithhisfriendaccompanied.In1921,hecametoIndiaforthesecondtime.ThesetwovisitshelpedFosteraccumulatedlargeamountsofmaterialof“APassagetoIndia”.AfterhisfirstvisittoIndia,Forsterdeterminedtowritealovestory,butafterhissecondvisit,hechangedhisnovel’sframeintoaethnicviolencedisputedcase.
Thestoryofthenovelhappenedintheearly20thcentury,Mrs.Moore,anoldwoman,withherprospectivedaughter-in-law,AdelawenttoIndiatoseeherson,Roony,whowasanofficialinChandraporecity.TheretheymetthelocaldoctorAziz,aMuslimandbecamegoodfriendsduetotherespectforeachother.InordertoknowtheIndia,Mrs.MooreandAdelawereinvitedtovisittheMarabarCaves.Unfortunately,thereMarabarCaveeventhappened.AdelaaccusedAzizoftryingtorapeherinthecaves.IndiansbelievedthatAzizwasinnocentanddidtheirbesttowinthislawsuittoprotecttheirnationalhonor,whiletheBritishcolonialauthoritiesusedthiseventtomakeafuss.TheynotonlytriedtopunishmentAziz,butalsotoexpendtheeventtoforceIndianintosubmission.HeretothecontradictionbetweenIndianandBritishwasintensified.
Thenovelhasbeenthefocusofliterarycriticsfromdifferentbackgroundsinthe
worldeversinceitspublication.GenerallyacceptedbycriticsasE.M.Forster’smostsuccessfulandimportantnovel,thenovelenjoysgoodreputationinBritishliterature.Forthewesternworld,thenovelplaysanimportantroleintheirobservingtheculturalofIndiaandOriental.Criticsofdifferentbackgroundshaveapproachedthenovelwiththeirownperspectives,includinghumanist,feministandpostcolonialperspective.WhenAPassagetoIndiawaspublished,itwasconsideredasacommentaryontheBritishandIndianproblems.Theearlycriticsfocusonthepoliticalandsocialaspectsofthenovel,oneoftherepresentativeswasPeterBurra,whoclaimedthatthisnovelwasabookthattheIndianquestioncannotbedisregard.Otherscholarsinterpretedthenovelassocialdocument,focusingonthehumanismandhumanrelationshipinthenovel.In“PromiseandWithdrawalinApassagetoIndia,”JohnColmeremphasizestheconflictsbetweentheIndiansandtheBritish.
Becauseofitscharacteristicsofheterogeneouscultures,thethesisistodosomeresearchesfromculturalperspectives.Bypresentingtwocompletelyopposedsocialordersandpatterns,severalpersonalrelationshipsandthreemajorreligions,thethesiswillgivereaderabetterunderstandingoftheclashinthenovelandForster’suniquecharms.

ThecolonialbackgrounddeterminesthefactthatIndiancannotbeequalwithBritishinculturestatus.In1757,IndiabecamethecolonyofBritish.SincethatIndiawasunderthecontrolofBritishgovernment.Theunequalpoliticalstatusdeterminesthetworacescannotcommunicateinanequallevel.ThecultureconnectionbetweentheBritishcolonizerandthecolonizedIndianfailsinChandraporefromtwoperspectives:
physicalseparationandpsychologicalseparation.Ononehand,inthecolonizedcityChandrapore,therelivestheBritishcolonizerandthecolonizedIndian.ToestablishtheBritishcolonizer’sdominanceoverthenativeIndian,thereisclearboundarybetweentheBritishresidentialareaandtheIndianone:
theBritishcolonizersliveinthecenterandthecolonizedIndianliveinthemarginalplace.Ontheotherhand,theBritishcolonizer’swhitesupremacyandthenativeIndians’inferioritycomplexshownatthebridgepartyhasbuiltahugementalgulfbetweenthesetworaces.
1.1TheGeographicalSeparation
ChandraporeisacolonizedIndiancity,whichismainlycharacterizedbyitsgeographicalseparationbetweentheBritishresidentialareaandtheIndianarea.Inthiscity,therelivestheBritishcolonizerandtheIndiannatives,separatedbyaclearboundary.TheBritishresidentialareaislocatedinthecivilstation,whiletheIndiansliveinthebazaar.Thedifferentgeographicalpositionsshowtheunequalpolitical
