1.INTRODUCTION
Thispaperoffersaconcisereviewontherenaissanceofaconventionalcapacitortoelectrochemicaldoublelayercapacitororsupercapacitor.Capacitorsarefundamentalelectricalcircuitelementsthatstoreelectricalenergyintheorderofmicrofaradsandassistinfiltering.Capacitorshavetwomainapplications;oneofwhichisafunctiontochargeordischargeelectricity.Thisfunctionisappliedtosmoothingcircuitsofpowersupplies,backupcircuitsofmicrocomputers,andtimercircuitsthatmakeuseoftheperiodstochargeordischargeelectricity.TheotherisafunctiontoblocktheflowofDC.Thisfunctionisappliedtofiltersthatextractoreliminateparticularfrequencies.Thisisindispensabletocircuitswhereexcellentfrequencycharacteristicsarerequired.Electrolyticcapacitorsarenextgenerationcapacitorswhicharecommercializedinfullscale.Theyaresimilartobatteriesincellconstructionbuttheanodeandcathodematerialsremainthesame.Theyarealuminum,tantalumandceramiccapacitorswheretheyusesolid/liquidelectrolyteswithaseparatorbetweentwosymmetricalelectrodes.
Anelectrochemicalcapacitor(EC),oftencalledaSupercapacitororUltracapacitor,storeselectricalchargeintheelectricdoublelayeratasurface-electrolyteinterface,primarilyinhigh-surface-areacarbon.Becauseofthehighsurfaceareaandthethinnessofthedoublelayer,thesedevicescanhaveveryahighspecificandvolumetriccapacitance.Thisenablesthemtocombineapreviouslyunattainablecapacitancedensitywithanessentiallyunlimitedcharge/dischargecyclelife.Theoperationalvoltagepercell,limitedonlybythebreakdownpotentialoftheelectrolyte,isusually<1or<3voltspercellforaqueousororganicelectrolytesrespectively.
Theconceptofstoringelectricalenergyintheelectricdoublelayerthatisformedattheinterfacebetweenanelectrolyteandasolidhasbeenknownsincethelate1800s.Thefirstelectricaldeviceusingdouble-layerchargestoragewasreportedin1957byH.I.BeckerofGeneralElectric(U.S.Patent2,800,616).Unfortunately,Becker’sdevicewasimpracticalinthat,similarlytoafloodedbattery,bothelectrodesneededtobeimmersedinacontainerofelectrolyte,andthedevicewasnevercomercialised.
Beckerdid,however,appreciatethelargecapacitancevaluessubsequentlyachievedbyRobertA.Rightmire,achemistattheStandardOilCompanyofOhio(SOHIO),towhomcanbeattributedtheinventionofthedeviceintheformatnowcommonlyused.Hispatent(U.S.3,288,641),filedin1962andawardedinlateNovember1966,andafollow-onpatent(U.S.Patent3,536,963)byfellowSOHIOresearcherDonaldL.Boosin1970,formthebasisforthemanyhundredsofsubsequentpatentsandjournalarticlescoveringallaspectsofECtechnology.
Thistechnologyhasgrownintoanindustrywithsalesworthseveralhundredmilliondollarsperyear.Itisanindustrythatispoisedtodayforrapidgrowthintheneartermwiththeexpansionofpowerqualityneedsandemergingtransportationapplications.
FollowingthecommercialintroductionofNEC’sSuperCapacitorin1978,underlicencefromSOHIO,EChaveevolvedthroughseveralgenerationsofdesigns.Initiallytheywereusedasback-uppowerdevicesforvisforcellsranginginsizefromsmallmillifaradsizedeviceswithexceptionalpulsepowerperformanceuptodevicesratedathundredsofthousandsoffarads,withsystemsinsomeapplicationsoperatingatupto1,500volts.Thetechnologyisseeingincreasinglybroaduse,replacingbatteriesolatileclockchipsandcomplementarymetal-oxide-semiconductor(CMOS)computermemories.Butmanyotherapplicationshaveemergedoverthepast30years,includingportablewirelesscommunication,enhancedpowerqualityfordistributedpowergenerationsystems,industrialactuatorpowersources,andhigh-efficiencyenergystorageforelectricvehicles(EVs)andhybridelectricvehicles(HEVs).Overall,theuniqueattributesofECsoftencomplementtheweaknessesofotherpowersourceslikebatteriesandfuelcells.
EarlyECsweregenerallyratedatafewvoltsandhadcapacitancevaluesmeasuredfromfractionsoffaradsuptoseveralfarads.Thetrendtodayinsomecasesandinotherscomplementingtheirperformance.
Thethirdgenerationevolutionistheelectricdoublelayercapacitor,wheretheelectricalchargestoredatametal/electrolyteinterfaceisexploitedtoconstructastoragedevice.TheinterfacecanstoreelectricalchargeintheorderofFarad.Themaincomponentintheelectrodeconstructionisactivatedcarbon.Thoughthisconceptwasinitializedandindustrializedsome40yearsago,therewasastagnancyinresearchuntilre
