Abstract:
Vocabularyisoneofthelanguageelements.Masteringthevocabularyisoneofthekeyfactorsforlearningalanguage.However,therehasbeenamainproblemaboutvocabularythatthelanguagelearnerscomeacrossinstudents’languagelearningandtheirdailycommunication.Sometraditionalmethodsforteachingvocabularyseemtoisolatethewordsfromthecontext,whichwouldmakethestudentsloseinterestinEnglishvocabularylearning.Thisthesisprovidesaneweffectiveway,memorycard,toteachandlearnvocabulary.Additional,thispaperwillexplorethepracticalityofmemorycardinpragmaticEnglishteachingandlookingforanewEnglishvocabularymemorizationmethodformosthighschoolstudents.

AsweallknowthatwordisthesmallestandmostimportantunitofChinese.ThereareseveralChineseidiomsfullyexplainedtheimportanceoftheChinesecharacters.IftherearenoChinesecharacters,theChinesewouldbecomewaterwithoutasourceandatreewithoutroots.Itwouldbeimpossibletolearnalanguagewithoutlearningvocabulary.InEnglishlanguage,thevocabularyisalsoveryimportant.Thedevelopmentoflanguagecompetenceisoneofthemostimportantstepsinthedevelopmentofcommunicativeability,whilewordsarethebasicandkeypartoflanguage,whichdirectlyinfluencelearners’abilityoflistening,speaking,reading,andwriting.Onlyaftermasteringenoughvocabulary,thelearnerscanpossiblyunderstandwhatotherssay,andexpressone’sthoughtfluentlyandsuccessfully.Butthepresentsituationabouthighschoolstudents’vocabularylearningleavesmuchtobedesired.Manystudentscannotcorrectlyapplythevocabularytoexpresstheirideasandattitudes,someerrorsaremadefrequentlyinstudents’oralandwrittenexpressionisrelatedtothepoorvocabulary.Itisveryimportanttoimprovethepresentation.
SomescholarspenttimeonsomehighschoolstudentinordertofindausefulwaytohelpstudentsrememberEnglishwordandimprovetheirabilitytouseit.
UsememorycardtorememberEnglishwordisveryeffectivewhichcancombinetheleadingroleofteachersandthemainroleofstudents.AccordingtoWuXiaofeng(2002),thememorabilityofteachersandtheactivelyofstudentscontributetotheenhancementofthequalityofeducation,andneitherisdispensable.QiaoJihong(2003)listedtheTenwaystomemoryEnglishword,itmentionedthatusememorycardtorememberwordwasinterestingandactive,whichfullofpracticalnessandcommunicatively,consolidateanddevelopmental.ChengXiaotangandZhengMin(2008)proposedamoredetailedEnglishvocabularyteachingstrategiestheory,amongthemtalkedaboutuseofpicturestorememberEnglishword.Learningthroughpicturescanhelpstudentstolearnaboutpeople,animals,things,andsuchterms,theuseofimagestoenhancethestudents'
understandingofvocabularyandmemory.ZhangXiaolan(2006)refersthattheflexibilityofthememorycardinEnglishteaching,teacherscanbaseonthestudents'
differentsituationtoguidethemmaketheirowncards.
Thisthesisconsistsoffourparts.Partoneisabriefintroductiontothisthesis,followedbytheproblemsofvocabularyteachinginmiddleschoolsinparettwo.PartthreeisaboutfeaturesandadvantagesofusingmemorycardtorememberEnglishword.PartfourprovidessomespecificuseofusingmemorycardtorememberEnglishword.Partfiveisanaturalconclusionofthewholethesis.
Ⅱ.ThePresentSituationofRememberingEnglishWordforHighSchoolStudents
Vocabularylearningisveryimportanttolanguagelearners.Sothestudentsneedtoenlargetheirvocabularyiftheywanttoexpresstheirideasclearlyandsuccessfully.However,somestudentsoftenencountersuchasituation:
althoughtheyhavespentalotoftimeinlearningvocabulary,theystillyieldlittleresults.Asweallknow,thesituationofvocabularyteachinginChinaisnotsatisfactory.Formanyyears,vocabularyteachinghasalwaysbeenneglectedinprogramsforteachers.Someteachersthinkthatstudentscanlearnthewordsbythemselves.AndusuallymanystudentsdonotfindagoodwaytorememberEnglishword.Thefollowingreasonscanlargelyaccountforsuchsituation.
