摘要
19世纪早期的英国正处于父权制的统治之下,因而当时妇女地位非常低下。
与此同时,女权运动已经持续了200多年。
《傲慢与偏见》在这场运动的第一股浪潮中应运而生,书中的女主角伊丽莎白即是反抗社会的代表。
本文拟从三方面证明伊丽莎白的反抗精神:
伊丽莎白反封建的勇气—所谓的传统美德是可改变的;
伊丽莎白的婚姻观—爱情是婚姻的基础;
伊丽莎白的自我意识—人人生而平等。
然而,那个时代的女权意识还处在萌芽之中,有待进一步发展。
因此,伊丽莎白的反抗精神并不彻底。
尽管如此,她的精神已经预示了一种新的趋向:
女性会在不久的将来得到她们应有的权力。

Ageneralknowledgeofthesocialandculturalsettinginwhichanoveliswrittenisimportant,formostnovelsmirrorthecustomsandvaluesofaparticularsociety.
JaneAusten’sPrideandPrejudiceappearedontheEnglishliteraryscenein1813.Atthattime,women’sstatuswaslowinthepatriarchy,soitwasbelievedthat“thebestwomanwasintellectuallytheinferioroftheworstman”.Underthiscircumstance,womenmetaseriesofmaterialandmentalproblems—inequalitiesinthesocialstatus,theburdensofmarriage,lackofeducation,domesticobligationsandsoon.
Meanwhile,however,Women’sLiberationMovement,thesocialstrugglewhichaimstoeliminateformsofoppressionbasedongenderandtogainforwomenequaleconomicandsocialstatusandrightstodeterminetheirownlivesasareenjoyedbymen,haslastedforover200years.ThefirstwaveisfromtheemergenceoftheWomen’sLiberationMovementintheEnlightenmenttotheendoftheSecondWorldWar,whichisalsothemostcrucialsocialbackgroundforJaneAustentowritehermasterpiece—PrideandPrejudice(ZhuHong,1982:
140).
“Itisatruthuniversallyacknowledged,thatasinglemaninpossessionofagoodfortune,mustbeinwantofawife.”(JaneAusten,1991:
1)Withthatline,claimedbysomescholarstobethemostfamousopeninglineofallfictions,JaneAustenbeginsPrideandPrejudice.Thatlineintroducesseveralofthemajorissuesandthemesthathavebeenexploredinthenovelthroughoutthepasttwocenturies:
marriage,wealth,class,property,propriety,andadebateovertheexistenceofuniversaltruth.(DebraTeachman,2008:
1)
ElizabethBennet,themainfemaleprotagonistinPrideandPrejudice,isakeenobserverofthenatureofmaninsociety.ShehasperhapsreceivedmoreadmirationthananyotherheroineinEnglandliterature,assheis“unique”(ElizabethJenkins,1964:
286).JaneAustenoncewrotetohersisteraboutElizabeth:
ImustconfessthatIthinkherasdelightfulacreatureaseverappearedinprint,andhowIshallbeabletotoleratethosewhodonotlikeher.AtleastIdonotknow.(MarvinMudrick,1952:
267)
Elizabethisself-reliantandindependent,while“contemptuousofalltheconventionsthatrestricttheindividual’sfreedom”(JaneNardin,1973:
160).Inthefollowingpart,herrebelliousspiritwillbedemonstratedfromthreeaspects:
hercourageofrevoltingagainstfeudalvirtues—theso-calledtraditionalvirtuesshouldbechanged;
herviewonmarriage—loveisthebasisforahappyunion;
herself-consciousness—allmenarecreatedequal.
