Introduction
Stateditsimply,creativityistomakesomethingnew.AsthecreatureoftheGod,wehumanbeingshavebeencreatingenormousthingsonthisplanet,forthesakeofsurvivalandprotection,contestandconquest,wellbeingandenjoyment,evenmischief,orjustofnoreason.Hencetherearebowsandshields,telephonesandspaceships,medicineandmovies,aswellascomputervirus.
Nowadays,peoplelovethenew,theoriginal,thecreativeandinnovative.Theyloveitnotonlybecauseofthepopularityofrevolutionariesorthetrendofliberalization,butbecauseitisthenecessitytodealwiththerapidenvironmentalchanges.Overthepastfewdecades,creativityandinnovationhavebecomeahighlyfashionabletopic,especiallyinbusinessworldwhereitsimportancetothecontinuedsuccessforbusinesshasbeenwellrecognized.Cook(1998)considerscreativityasanelementofcompetitiveadvantagefororganizations,andMajaro(1991)suggestsenhancedcreativitycanprovideacompanywithacompetitiveedge.Whilemanybusinessmenalsoallegethatcompaniesmustinnovateortheywilldie.
Eitherfavouredbyresearchersorcriticalforexecutives,creativityandinnovationinbusinessmanagementhasbeeninvestigatedandpracticedatalllevelsfromorganizationstructure,teamproject,toindividualperformance.Inthispaper,firstthereisabriefoverviewintheareaaboutsomekeyconceptsandmajortheoriesrelatingtocreativityenhancementandcreativeproblemsolving.Next,adiscussiononteamcreativitybuildingiselaborated.Last,itistheimplicationandimplementationofcertaincreativityenhancementtechniquesinworksituationinagivencompany.
ABroadViewonCreativityandInnovation
Creativityvs.innovation:
Notionsaboutcreativityandinnovationarecomplex,andthereisnoonestandardauthorityonthesubject(Proctor,2005).Thetwotermsareoftenusedinterchangeablyandthatmaysometimesmisleadliteraturereviewerswhoarenewinthefield.
Theconceptofcreativityoftencomesacrossinourdailylife,andtherearevariousdefinitionsofit.Thesimplestoneis“thinkingdifferently”fromDennisGioia(1995)whosawcreativityastheprocessof“makingthefamiliarstrangeandmakingthestrangefamiliar.”Amabile’s(1996)definitionofcreativityas“theproductionofnovelandusefulidealinanydomain”hasbeenwidelycited.Similarly,Gilliam(1993)definedcreativityasaprocessofdiscoveringwhathasnotbeenconsidered–theactofmakingnewconnections.Theyallimplythatcreativityinvolvesseeingthinginadifferentwayandideagenerationisthekeycomponentofcreativity(McAdam&
McClelland,2002).However,theconceptismulti-facetedandmorecomplicatedthanwhatitisexpressedinwords.AsKoestler(1964)said:
“Truecreativityoftenstartswherelanguageends.”
Whilecreativityisclearlyidentifiedwithideageneration,Gurteen(1998)definesinnovationisaboutputtingtheseideasintoactionbysifting,refiningandimplementing.Healsobelievesthatcreativityisaboutdivergentthinkingwhereasinnovationrequiresconvergentthinking.Heap(1989)suggeststhatinnovationistheresultsofcreativity.Thompson(2003)alsoagreesthatifcreativitypertainstoideas,theninnovationpertainstotheservicesandproductsthatresultfromcreativeideas.
Majaro(1988)depictedtherelationshipbetweencreativityandinnovationasaseriesofintersectingcircles(seeFigure1),wherecreativeideasaretheinputandinnovationistheoutput.Ideasarescreenedtoproduceresults,whichincludemakingsomethingnewer,better,faster,cheaper,and/ormoreaesthetic.ThisviewissupportedbyAmabile(1997)whoconsideredcreativityasthefirststepininnovation,whichisthesuccessfulimplementationofthenovel,appropriateideas.

Creativityvs.imagination:
Titus(2000)hasdefinedcreativityas“thebirthofimaginativenewideas”.Ingeneral,themathematiciantendstogetgoodideasinmathematics,themusicianinmusic,thepsychologistinpsychology.Creativethinkingarisesmoreeasilyinfieldsandinrelationtoproblemsthatweknowagooddealabout(Proctor,2005).Locke(1964)maintainedthatthesourceofallideasishumanexperienceandunderstanding,thatis,ideassprangfromknowledge.Thisimpliescreativityistheessenceofprofoundknowledge.WhileAlbertEinsteinoncewrote:
“Imaginationismoreimportantthanknowledge.Knowledgeislimited.Imaginationencirclestheworld.”
