Abstract
Automationrepresentsaveryactiveareaofhumanfactorsresearch.Thejournal,HumanFactors,publishedaspecialissueonautomationin1985.Sincethen,hundredsofscientificstudieshavebeenpublishedexaminingthenatureofautomationanditsinteractionwithhumanperformance.However,despiteadramaticincreaseinresearchinvestigatinghumanfactorsissuesinaviationautomation,thereremainareasthatneedfurtherexploration.ThisNASATechnicalMemorandumdescribesanewareaofautomationdesignandresearch,called“adaptiveautomation.”Itdiscussestheconceptsandoutlinesthehumanfactorsissuesassociatedwiththenewmethodofadaptivefunctionallocation.Theprimaryfocusisonhuman-centereddesign,andspecificallyonensuringthatadaptiveautomationisfromateam-centeredperspective.Thedocumentshowsthatadaptiveautomationhasmanyhumanfactorsissuescommontotraditionalautomationdesign.Muchliketheintroductionofothernewtechnologiesandparadigmshifts,adaptiveautomationpresentsanopportunitytoremediatecurrentproblemsbutposesnewonesforhuman-automationinteractioninaerospaceoperations.ThereviewhereisintendedtocommunicatethephilosophicalperspectiveanddirectionofadaptiveautomationresearchconductedundertheAerospaceOperationsSystems(AOS),PhysiologicalandPsychologicalStressorsandFactors(PPSF)project.

Clearly,thehumanfactorsissuesofautomationhavesignificantimplicationsforsafetyinaviation.However,whatexactlydowemeanbyautomation?
