[3]).Ifsuchbehaviouristypicalforanystructure
thenthelargecompressive
strains(inexcessof0.0035)measuredonthetopsurfaceofareinforcedconcretebeamatitsultimatelimitstate(seefig.1)
cannotbeattributedtopost-ultimateuniaxialstress-straincharacteristics.Furthermore
sincethecompressivestrainattheultimatestrengthlevelofanyconcreteunderuniaxialcompressionisoftheorderof0.002(seefig.2)
itwouldappearthatarealisticpredictionofthebeamresponseunderloadcannotbebasedsolelyontheascendingportionoftheuniaxialstress-strainrelationshipofconcrete.
Inviewoftheabove
theworkdescribedinthefollowingappraisesthewidelyheldviewthatauniaxialstress-strainrelationshipconsistingofanascendingandagraduallydescendingportionisessentialfortherealisticdescriptionofthebehaviourofareinforcedconcretebeaminflexure.Resultsobtainedfrombeamssubjectedtoflexureundertwo-pointloadingindicatethatthelargestrainsexhibitedbyconcreteinthecompressionzoneofthebeamsareduetoatriaxialstateofstressratherthantheuniaxialpost-ultimatestress-straincharacteristicsofconcrete.Itisshownthattheassumptionthatthematerialitselfsuffersacompleteandimmediatelossofload-carryingcapacitywhenultimatestrengthisexceedediscompatiblewiththeobserved"
