Oneofthemostimportantparametersthatcontrolsthesuspensionofroaddustparticlesintheairisroadsurfacemoisture.Thisiscalculatedeveryhourfromabudgetequationthattakesintoaccountprecipitation,evaporationandrunoff.Duringwetconditionsaroaddustlayerisbuiltupfromroadwearwhichstronglydependsontheuseofstuddedtyresandroadsanding.Thedustlayerisreducedduringdryroadconditionsbysuspensionofparticlesduetovehicle-inducedturbulence.Thedustlayerisalsoreducedbywash-offduetoprecipitation.Directnon-tailpipevehicleemissionsduetothewearandtearoftheroadsurface,brakesandtyresareaccountedforinthetraditionalwayasconstantemissionfactorsexpressedasmassemittedpervehiclekilometre.
ThemodelresultsarecomparedwithmeasurementsfrombothanarrowstreetcanyoninthecitycentreofStockholmandfromanopenhighwayoutsidethecity.Themodelisabletoaccountforthemainfeaturesintheday-to-daymeanPM10variabilityforthestreetcanyonandforthehighway.ApeakinthePM10concentrationistypicallyobservedinlatewinterandearlyspringintheNordiccountrieswherestuddedtyresareused.Thisbehaviourisduetoacombinationoffactors:
frequentconditionswithdryroads,highnumberofcarswithstuddedtyresandanaccumulatedroaddustlayerthatincreasessuspensionofparticles.ThestudyshowsthatusingaconstantemissionfactorforPM10orrelatingPM10emissionstoNOxcannotbeusedforpredictionofday-to-dayvariationsinPM10concentrationsinthetrafficenvironmentsstudiedhere.Themodelneedstodescribevariationsindustload,wetnessoftheroadandhowdustsuspensioninteractswiththeseprocesses.
