lljust,inthiscontextofthisintroduction,mentiontwootherthingsabouthim.Oneispriortobeingdeanandinfact,stillasadean,he'
sanactivescientistandinparticular,asocialpsychologistactivelyinvolvedinstudyinghealthpsychology,theproperuseofpsychologicalmethodstoframehealthmessages,andalsoisthefounderanddeveloperoftheideaofemotionalintelligence,anideahe'
sdoneahugeamountofresearchon.Secondly,Peterisorwasanactiveandextremelywell-knownteacheratYaleCollege.Hetaughtatonepoint,thelargestcourseeverinYaleCollege鈥�acourseonPsychologyinLawwhichbrokeeveryrecordeverhadhere.Andbeforethat,duringthat,andafterthat,hewasalegendaryIntroductiontoPsychologyteacher.AndIthink--andhehadsomereasonforwhyhewassolegendarywithhislecturetodayonthetopicoflove.

snotonethatIstudypersonally,atleastnotinthelab,and--butitisfuntotalkabout.Anditisatopicthatlendsitselftomanysocialpsychologicalphenomena.It'
salsogreattobeabletocomeinandguestlecture.OneofthethingsIverymuchmisssinceservingasdeanistheopportunitytoteachPsychology110.AndalthoughIlovebeingdean,IdomissteachingIntroductoryPsychology,thefeelingofexposingpeopletoideasthatmaybeyouhadn'
theardbefore.
Well,Isuspectsomeoftheideasinthistalkyou'
llhavenotheardbeforeandforavarietyofreasons.Acoupleofthethingsyou'
llnoticeisthatsomeoftheexperimentsI'
lltalkabouttodayarenotthekindsofexperimentsthatcanbedoneanymore.They'
renotconsideredethicallyacceptablebuttheyweredoneinthe鈥�50sand鈥�60sandearly鈥�70swhenethicalstandardsweredifferentandsowecanteachthem.Wejustcan'
tgiveyouthesameexperiencesthatsomeofthecollegestudentsthatwe'
lltalkabouttodayinthesestudieshad.
TheotherthingIwillmentionisthatthereisacertainandrocentricandheterosexualqualitytomuchofthesocialpsychologicalresearchonromanticlove.You'
llseethatintheexperiments.Usually,theparticipantsaremenandusuallythetargetsarewomenintheseexperiments.I'
mnotendorsingthisastheonlywaytostudylove.ItjusthappenstobethewaytheseexperimentsweredoneandsoImentionthiscautionrightfromthebeginning.We'
llhavetothinkabout--Oneofthethingsyoushouldthinkaboutisdoyouthinktheseexperimentsgeneralizedtootherkindsofdyadicrelationships.Andthat'

smadeupofthreecomponents:
intimacy,passion,andcommitment,orwhatissometimescalleddecisioncommitment.Andthesearerelativelystraightforward.Hearguedthatyoudon'
thaveloveifyoudon'
thaveallthreeoftheseelements.
Intimacyisthefeelingofcloseness,ofconnectednesswithsomeone,ofbonding.Operationally,youcouldthinkofintimacyasyousharesecrets,youshareinformationwiththispersonthatyoudon'
tsharewithanybodyelse.Okay.That'
sreallywhatintimacyis,thebondthatcomesfromsharinginformationthatisn'
tsharedwithother--withmanyotherpeople.Secondelementispassion.Passioniswhatyouthinkitis.Passionisthe--wewouldsaythedrivethatleadstoromance.Youcanthinkofitasphysicalattractionorsex.AndSternbergarguesthatthisisarequiredcomponentofaloverelationship.Itisnot,however,arequiredcomponentoftakingashowerinCalhounCollege.[aYaledormitory][laughter]
