Becausealotofclassicswerewrittensolongago,thelanguageusedinthemisquitedifferentfromthelanguageusedtoday.Thismakesthemdifficultforsomepeopletoread,andoften,theclassicsarelefttogatherdustonshelves.Manypeopledonotreadthembecausetheythinkthattheyareold-fashionedandboring,andhavenothingtodowithlifetoday.
However,ifthisistrue,whydowestillfindclassicsinbookshopsandlibraries?
Theyhavenotdisappearedandstillhaveaplaceintheworldtoday.Whyelsewouldmanyfilmsbasedonthembesuccessful?
In1995,Clueless,theaward-winningfilmbasedonJaneAustin’snovelEmma,wasreleased.Threeyearslater,in1998,amodernadaptationofCharlesDickens’snovelGreatExpectationsappearedincinemas.Idonotthinkthattheseclassicnovelswouldbemadeintofilmsiftheyhadnothingtodowithlifetoday.

CharlesDickenswasborninPortsmouth,Englandin1812.Hewrotemanynovels.OliveTwist,DavidCopperfieldandGreatExpectationsareprobablyhisbest-knownworks.Hefirstpublishedmanynovelsonechapteratatimeinnewspapers,andsomewerelaterperformedonstage.Forpeopleatthattime,hisstorieswerelikethesoapoperasweseeonTVtoday.

GreatExpectationsissetinEnglandintheearly1800s.DickensusesPip,themaincharacter,totellthestory.Pipisnotonlyacharacter,healsotellsthestoryofGreatExpectations.PipliveswithhisoldersisterandherhusbandJoe.Pip’ssisterseldomhasakindwordtosay,butJoeisakindandsimpleman,whowouldratherdiethanseeanyharmcometoPip.
