Thelabels/termsfordifferentkindsofspeechactsapplytothespeaker’scommunicativeintentioninproducinganutterance.
Speaker:
expectingtherecognitionofsuchcommunicativeintentionbythehearer
Speakerandhearer:
helpedbythecircumstancessurroundingtheutterance
Circumstances(includingotherutterances):
thespeechevent.
Inmanyways,thespeecheventdeterminestheinterpretationofanutteranceasperformingaparticularspeechact.

Utteredonawintrydaybyaspeakerreachingforacupoftea,itislikelytobeinterpretedasacomplaint.

Thesameutterancecanbeinterpretedasdifferentkindsofspeechact.Thereisnooneutterancetooneactioncorrespondence.Thereismoretotheinterpretationofaspeechactthancanbefoundintheutterancealone.

Meaninglessexpressionsarenotregardedaslocutionaryacts
Peopledon’tjustproducewell-formedutterances.Theyformanutterancewithapurposeorsomekindoffunctioninmind.Thisiscalledtheillocutionaryact.Theillocutionaryactisperformedviathecommunicativeforceofanutterance(generallyknownastheillocutionaryforceoftheutterance).
