Abstract
TheGreatGatsbyisthemostrenownedmasterpieceofF.ScottFitzgeraldin1925,depictingastorythathappenedinNewYorkcityandLongIslandduringthe1920s.Duetoitsbirth,FitzgeraldhasgainedhisreputationincontemporaryAmericanliteraturehistory.Thispaperconsistsoftwoparts.ThefirstpartofthepaperintroducesAmericandreamwhichconcludeshistoricalretrospect,historicaloriginanditsdevelopment,aimingtotracebacktothereasonsthatgiverisetothefailureofAmericandream.Then,thepaperdemonstratestheconflictbetweenAmericandreamandthelowerclassesofAmericansociety,includingtheconflictbetweenAmericandreamandthelureofmaterialworldreal,andtheconflictbetweenAmericandreamandchangeofmoralstandardsofAmericanlowerclass.

FitzgeraldwasborninSt.Paul,MinnesotaonSeptember24,1896.HewastheonlysonofanuppermiddleclassCatholicfamily.WhilehewasatPrincetonuniversity,theyoungFitzgeralddevelopedhistalentinwriting.WhentheFirstWorldWarbrokeout,heenlistedinthearmy,andinatrainingcampinAlabama,hemetandfeltinlovewithZeldasayre,thesouthernbellewhobecamehiswifeandwhowasthemodelformostofthebeautifulandgayheroinesofhisfiction.Hislifewithherwasamixtureofgreathappinessandgreatmiseryandpain.In1925,FitzgeraldpublishedhismostfamousnoveltheGreatGatsby.Beforelong,hiswifebecamementallyill.Fitzgeralddeclinedasawriter.Heworkedregularlyasascript—writerinHollywoodfrom1937to1939,whenhesuccumbedtoalcoholism.Hediedofheartattackin1940.Hiswife,Zelda,wassenttoasanitariumanddiedinafirestartedbyherselfinthesanitarium.
