Thisisthefourthteachingperiodofthisunit.Asusual,theteacherwillfirstgetstudentstoreviewwhattheylearnedinthelastperiod,andthenleadinthenewlesson.
Wewillmainlydealwithlisteningandspeakinginthisperiod.Atthebeginning,studentslistentoaconversationamongyoungpeople.CarlaandHariarestudentsinTrinidad.TheirChinesefriendsLiMeiandWuPing,arevisitingfortheCarnivalholidayinFebruary.TheyarejoininginaparadeforCarnivalinTrinidad.ThislisteningactivityisnotonlytoofferstudentsknowledgeabouthowtocelebrateCarnivalinTrinidadbuttoencouragestudentstolistenandthenusewhattheyhaveheardtohelpthemanswerquestions.Itisanimportantexercisebecauseitlinksskillstogetherandusesthemtoproduceausefulphonecall.Makesurestudentsreadthequestionsbeforetheylistentothetape.Thisistosharpentheirattentionandlistenfortheanswers.Thiswillalsohelpthemgetthegistofthelisteningtext.Theteachingproceduresmaybeasfollows:
First,letstudentsgothroughthedirections,picturesandthequestionsandguessthelisteningtextmaybeabout.Playthetapeforstudentstolistentoanddecidewhethertheirguessingisright.Second,askthemtolistenagainforthemtoanswerthequestions.Third,letthemlistenathirdtimetochecktheiranswers.Whiletheyarelistening,theteachershouldpauseandrepeatthekeysentencestohelpstudentsunderstand.Whencheckingtheanswers,explainsomedifficultlisteningpointsifnecessary.Intheend,showthemthelisteningtextandletthemreadandretellit.Thisstepcanhelpstudentsunderstandandgraspthelisteningmaterialfarfurther.Perhapssomestudentswillfindithardtolistentoandunderstandlisteningmaterials.Encouragethemnottogiveup.ThemoretheylistentoEnglish,theeasieritbecomes.
Thespeakingexerciseisintendedtogivestudentstheopportunitytopracticeaphoneconversationusingthefunctionalitems.Sotheyshouldlearnsomeexpressionsonhowtomakephonecallsandinvitationsandexpressandthanksfirst.Thentheyarerequiredtocreatesuchaphoneconversation.Duringthecourse,letthemknowthepoliteformsofEnglishareimportantandshouldbepracticedinavarietyofsituations.Alsoencouragethemtousevocabularyfromthereadingandlisteningpassages.
Thisperiodplacesemphasisondevelopingstudents’listeningandspeakingability.Weshouldtryourbesttoencouragestudentstosaysomething.Don’talwayscorrectthemistakestheyhavemadewhiletheyarespeaking.Otherwise,theywouldfeelreluctantandnotsayanythingmore.
