Withinaframeofdevelopmentofecologicalpowersteeringsystems,wehavecompletedthedevelopmentofanelectricmotor-drivenpumptypehydraulicpowersteeringsystem,equippedwithnotconventionalbrushedmotorbutbrushlessmotorcontrolledbyECU,whichhasachievedafurtherenergysaving.Thefollowingdescribesthecontentofthissystem.

1.Introduction
Fromaviewpointofrecentglobalecologicalproblems,animprovementoffuelconsumptionandexhaustgasregulationssuchastheJapaneseAutomobileNOxlawhavebeencomingtobeworldwideimportantissues.

svehiclesdrivenbygasolineengineordieselengine,ahydraulicpowersteering(calledhereafter"
NPS"
)ofwhichthepowersourceisanengine-drivenhydraulicpumpisgenerallymounted.
Inthispowersteeringsystem,ahydraulicpumpasmentionedaboveisrotatedinproportionwitharevolutionspeedofengineandrunsathighrevolutionspeedevenduringastraight-aheadandhigh-vehiclespeeddrivingwithnosteeringoperation,regardlessofanecessityforpowerassistance,sothatitalwaysconsumesawastefulenergy.Itissaidthatanenergyconsumedbysuchpowersteeringsystemrepresentsapproximately3%ofallthevehiclefuelconsumption.Therefore,arequestforenergysavinginsuchpowersteeringsystemwouldbemoreandmoreintensifiedhereafter.
Infact,theconventionalengine-drivenhydraulicpumpshavebeensubjectedtodifferenttrialssuchasanapplicationoflowerflowratewithhigherpressureandanimplementationofenergysaving.Howeverthesetrialshaveexertedaneffectnotdrasticbutlimitedtocertainextentonthefueleconomy.Inresponsetoarequestforfurtherfueleconomy,wehavedevelopedanenergysavingtypepowersteeringsystemthatisahydraulicpowersteeringsystem,butcomprisingapumpdrivenbyanelectricmotorasapowersourceindependentofengine,sothatadrasticfueleconomycanberealized.
Thefollowingisadescriptionofthiselectricmotor-drivenpump(calledhereafter"
electricpump"
)typehydraulicpowersteeringsystem(calledhereafter"
H-EPS"
).
2.OutlinesofElectricMotor-DrivenPumpTypeHydraulicPowerSteeringSystem(H-EPS)
2.1SecondGenerationH-EPS
Since1989wehaveproducedinFranceanelectricpump(Firstgenerationtype,withoutacontroller)constitutedbyhighefficiencygearpump,andsince1998wehaveproducedthereinapumpofthesamekind(Secondgenerationtype)equippedwithabrushedDCmotorhavingitsrevolutionspeedcontrolledbyaremotecontroller.Thistypedoesnotuseanexternalsensor,butamotorcurrentdetectioncircuitinsideofthecontrollerforcalculationofmotorcurrentvariation.Thismethodallowsajudgmentofsteeringconditionandacontrolofmotorrevolutionspeedbyavariationofmotordrivingvoltage.Asaresult,anenergysavingcanberealizedbyanefficientcontrolofelectricpumpmodulewithalowcosttypecontroller.
Thiscontrolmethodconsistsofloweringthemotorrevolutionspeedduringnosteeringoperation(standbymode)andincreasingitwhenanysteeringoperationrequirespowerassistance(powermode)forthepowersteeringsystemoperation.Transitionfromthestandbymodetothepowermodeisrealizedbycontrollingthemotorrevolutionspeedasafunctionoftheamountandrateofamotorcurrentvariationundergivenpressureriseatsteeringoperation.Howeverthismethodcouldprovidealowresponsivenessatthemodetransitionandmakesteeringfeelingeasilyworse,sothatsomesolutionshouldbetakensuchasahighermotorrevolutionspeedatstandbymode.Ifnot,thismethodwouldcontributealittletoenergysaving.
Asasystemhavingaresponsivenessbetterthanthatforthesecondgenerationelectricpumpandtargetingfurtherenergysaving,wehavedevelopedthethirdgenerationelectricpumpwhichintegratesabrushlessDCmotorandacontroller.Thispumphasbeenequippedwiththe1.4Lto2.0LofPSA307vehicles(successionto306)sincespring,2001.
