So,I'llbespeakingtoyouusinglanguage...becauseIcan.Thisisonethesemagicalabilitiesthatwehumanshave.Wecantransmitreallycomplicatedthoughtstooneanother.
SowhatI'mdoingrightnowis,I'mmakingsoundswithmymouthasI'mexhaling.I'mmakingtonesandhissesandpuffs,andthosearecreatingairvibrationsintheair.
Thoseairvibrationsaretravelingtoyou,they'rehittingyoureardrums,andthenyourbraintakesthosevibrationsfromyoureardrumsandtransformsthemintothoughts.Ihope.
Ihopethat'shappening.Sobecauseofthisability,wehumansareabletotransmitourideasacrossvastreachesofspaceandtime.We'reabletotransmitknowledgeacrossminds.
Icanputabizarrenewideainyourmindrightnow.Icouldsay,"Imagineajellyfishwaltzinginalibrarywhilethinkingaboutquantummechanics."
」
Now,ifeverythinghasgonerelativelywellinyourlifesofar,youprobablyhaven'thadthatthoughtbefore.ButnowI'vejustmadeyouthinkit,throughlanguage.
Nowofcourse,thereisn'tjustonelanguageintheworld,thereareabout7,000languagesspokenaroundtheworld.Andallthelanguagesdifferfromoneanotherinallkindsofways.
Somelanguageshavedifferentsounds,theyhavedifferentvocabularies,andtheyalsohavedifferentstructures--veryimportantly,differentstructures.Thatbegsthequestion:
Doesthelanguagewespeakshapethewaywethink?
Now,thisisanancienthavebeenspeculatingaboutthisquestionforever.Charlemagne,HolyRomanemperor,said,"Tohaveasecondlanguageistohaveasecondsoul"--strongstatementthatlanguagecraftsreality.
Butontheotherhand,ShakespearehasJulietsay,"What'sinaname?
Arosebyanyothernamewouldsmellassweet."Well,thatsuggeststhatmaybelanguagedoesn'tcraftreality.
Theseargumentshavegonebackandforthforthousandsofyears.Butuntilrecently,therehasn'tbeenanydatatohelpusdecideeitherway.
Recently,inmylabandotherlabsaroundtheworld,we'vestarteddoingresearch,andnowwehaveactualscientificdatatoweighinonthisquestion.
Soletmetellyouaboutsomeofmyfavoriteexamples.I'llstartwithanexamplefromanAboriginalcommunityinAustraliathatIhadthechancetoworkwith.ThesearetheKuukThaayorrepeople.
TheyliveinPormpuraawattheverywestedgeofCapeYork.What'scoolaboutKuukThaayorreis,inKuukThaayorre,theydon'tusewordslike"left"and"right,"andinstead,everythingisincardinaldirections:
north,south,eastandwest.
AndwhenIsayeverything,Ireallymeaneverything.Youwouldsaysomethinglike,"Oh,there'sanantonyoursouthwestleg."Or,"Moveyourcuptothenorth-northeastalittlebit."
」
Infact,thewaythatyousay"hello"inKuukThaayorreisyousay,"Whichwayareyougoing?
"Andtheanswershouldbe,"North-northeastinthefardistance.Howaboutyou?
"
」
Soimagineasyou'rewalkingaroundyourday,everypersonyougreet,youhavetoreportyourheadingdirection.
Butthatwouldactuallygetyouorientedprettyfast,right?
Becauseyouliterallycouldn'tgetpast"hello,"ifyoudidn'tknowwhichwayyouweregoing.Infact,peoplewhospeaklanguageslikethisstayorientedreallywell.
Theystayorientedbetterthanweusedtothinkhumanscould.Weusedtothinkthathumanswereworsethanothercreaturesbecauseofsomebiologicalexcuse:
"Oh,wedon'thavemagnetsinourbeaksorinourscales."
