On1June,1910,CaptainScottleftLondontobeginhisjourneytotheAntarctic.Onhisway①,hereceivedamessagefromtheNorwegianexplorerRoaldAmundsen:
“I’mgoingSouth.”SotheracetotheSouthPolewason②!
Duringthepolarsummerof1910-1911,bothteamsorganisedfoodbasesinpreparation③fortheirjourneysthenextyear.Thencamethetotaldarknessofthepolarwinter.ScottandAmundsenwaitedanxiouslyforspring.
Amundsenwasthefirsttoleave,on15October,1911.Hehadteamsofdogspulling④thesledges⑤andallhismenwereonskis.Becauseof⑥this,hemaderapidprogress⑦.Scottlefton1Novemberandsoonhadproblems.First,histwosledgesbrokedown⑧,andthenthehorsesbegantohaveseriousdifficultieswith⑨thesnowandthecold.Afterawhile⑩,Scottandhismenhadtopushthesledgesthemselves.
AmundsenreachedthePoleon14DecemberandputaNorwegianflagthere.Thenhepreparedfor⑪thereturnjourney.ScottfinallyarrivedatthePolewithfourteammemberson17January.Theywereshocked⑫whentheysawtheNorwegianflag.Scottwrotesadlyinhisdiary:
“Well,wehavenowlostthegoal⑬ofourambition⑭andmustface⑮800milesofhardpushing—andgoodbyetomostofourdreams.”
Thereturnjourneywasoneoftheworstinthehistoryofexploration⑯.Themenweresoonexhausted⑰andwererunningoutof⑱food.Theweatherconditionswereterrible.Scottstartedtorealise⑲theirhopeless⑳situation:

,butwhateachmanfeelsinhisheartIcanonlyguess.Puttingonourshoesinthemorningisgettingslowerandslower.”
However,ontheirwaybacktheyfoundtimetolookforrocks.Theycarried20kilosofrocksalltheway
with
them.Later,theserocksproved
thatatonetime
inthedistant
pasttheAntarcticwascoveredbyplants.
Then,disastersooncame.EdgarEvanshadaterriblediseaseanddiedafterabadfall.ThenexttogowasCaptainOates,whowashavinggreatdifficultywalking
.Scottrecordedhisdeath:
“Hesaid,‘IamjustgoingoutsideandImaybesometime
.’WeknewthatpoorOateswaswalkingtohisdeath,butthoughwetriedto
stophim,weknewthatitwastheactofabravemanandanEnglishgentleman.Weallhopetomeettheendwithasimilarspirit,andcertainlytheendisnotfar.”
Scottandtwoofhisteammemberscarriedon
andgotwithin
elevenmilesofoneoftheirfoodbases.Butthenaterriblestormstartedandtheycouldnotleavetheirtent.Scottspentsomeofhislasthourswriting.Hewrotealetterfullofsadness
tohiswifeKathleen:
“Icouldtellyoulotsandlotsaboutthisjourney.Whatstoriesyouwouldhavefortheboy...Butwhataprice
topay.”
Scott’sdiaryalsotoldthestoryoftheirend:
