MargaretMitchellwasborninAntlanta,Georgia,whereshelivedherentirelife.ThedaughterofEugeneMitchell,anattorneyandpresidentofAntlantaHistoricalSociety.SheattendedSmithCollegeforoneyear,butthedeathofhermotherrequiredhertoreturnhometomanagethehouseholdofherfatherandherolderbrother.AnunsucessfulmarriagetoBerrienUpshawin1922endedindivorce,andin1925,shemarriedJohnRobertMarsh.Ayearaftertheirmarriage,sheforcedtoresignherpositionwiththeAntlantaJournalasaresultofanankleinjury.WiththeencouragementofJohn,shebegentowritenovel.Mitchellspentsixmonthsrecheckingthehistoricalfactsofthenovel.Onseveraloccasions,shestatedthatshetookgreaterprideinitsaccuratedates,places,dialectsandarchitecturaldetailsthaninitsplotorstyle.Thenoveldidnotappearuntil30June,becausetheBook-of-the-MonthClubchoseitastheJulyselection.Mostofthereviewsrangedfromfavorabletoenthusiastic,withtheexceptionofthoseinthe“left-wing”press,whichcondemneditasaglorificationofracism.

sEmancipationProclamationmadethefreeingoftheslavesawargoal,despiteoppositionfromCopperheadswhosupportedslaveryandsecession.IntheEast,RobertEdwardLeerolledupaseriesofConfederatevictoriesovertheArmyofthePotomac.IntheWest,theUnionNavycapturedtheportofNewOrleansin1862,andUlyssesS.GrantseizedcontroloftheMississippiRiverbycapturingVicksburg,MississippiinJuly1863,thussplittingtheConfederacy.By1864,long-termUnionadvantagesingeography,manpower,industry,finance,politicalorganizationandtransportation.GrantfoughtanumberofbloodybattleswithLeeinVirginiainthesummerof1864.Leewoninatacticalsensebutloststrategically.In1865,theConfederacycollapsedafterLeesurrenderedtoGrantatAppomattoxCourtHouseandtheslaveswerefreed.
