Thegraphillustrateschangesintheamountsofbeef,lamb,chickenandfishconsumedinaparticularEuropeancountrybetween1979and2004.
In1979beefwasbyfarthemostpopularofthesefoods,withabout
225gramsconsumedperpersonperweek.Lambandchickenwereeaten
insimilarquantities(around150grams),whilemuchlessfishwas
consumed(justover50grams).
However,duringthis25-yearperiodtheconsumptionofbeefandlambfelldramaticallytoapproximately100gramsand55gramsrespectively.Theconsumptionoffishalsodeclined,butmuchlesssignificantlytojustbelow50grams,soalthoughitremainedtheleastpopularfood,consumptionlevelswerethemoststable.
Theconsumptionofchicken,ontheotherhand,showedanupwardtrend,overtakingthatoflambin1980andthatofbeefin1989.By2004ithadsoaredtoalmost250gramsperpersonperweek.
Overall,thegraphshowshowtheconsumptionofchickenincreaseddramaticallywhilethepopularityoftheseotherfoodsdecreasedovertheperiod.

Wecanseeasimilarpatterninthesecondgraph,whichshowsthatthenumberofpeopleworkingasscientistsandtechniciansinindustrializedcountriesincreasedfrom55to85per1,000people
between1980and1990,whilethenumberindevelopingcountrieswentfrom12to20.
Finally,thefiguresforspendingonresearchanddevelopmentshowthatindustrializedcountriesmorethandoubledtheirspending,from$200bnto$420bn,whiledevelopingcountriesdecreasedtheirs,from$75bndownto$25bn.
Overallwecanseethatnotonlyarethereverylargedifferencesbetweenthetwoeconomiesbutthattheregapsarewidening.

Overall,itisclearthatby2000thesetwocountriesreliedondifferentprincipalfuelsources:
