ThearticlereportsontheCareerConnectionsprogramwhichisdevelopedtohelphighschoolstudentswithdisabilitiesidentifytheircareergoals,andkeepthejobsthatmatchthosegoals.Theprogramhelpsthespecialneedsstudentssearchforemploymentopportunitiesthatconformswiththeirskillsandinterests.CareerConnectionsiscomprisedofsixprogramelementswhicharedesignedtoanswerspecificquestionthatcanguidethestudent'
scareerpath.

teasysuccessfullycompetingwithotherjobseekersforthosealltoorarepositionsthatpayagoodwage,havereasonablehours,andofferemployerbenefitsandprospectsforadvancement.Thisisadauntingundertakingformanyindividu-als—andevenmoresoforayoungpersonwhohappenstohaveadisability.AccordingtotheUnitedStatesChamberofCommerce,theunemploymentrateforindividualswithdisabilitiesisastaggering62percent.TheGramWoodAreaEducationAgency(GWAEA),anintermediateagencythatserves33eastcentralIowaschooldistricts,beganworkingin2000todeterminewhyyoungpeoplewithdisabilitieswerehavingadifficulttimetransitioningfromhighschooltotheworldofwork.GWAEAwasparticularlydisturbedbyitsfollow-upsurveyfindingswhichshowedthatstudentsinthemiddlerangeoftheseveritycontinuumwerestrugglingtofindandkeepgoodjobs.Morethan40percentofgraduatesservedinwhatwerecalledSelf-ContainedwithIntegrationprogramsandwereunemployed,andmorethan20percentonlyworkedpantimewithin18monthsofleavinghighschool.Theagencydeterminedthatoneexplanationforthenumbersisthefactchatstudentshadinsufficientcareerexplorationandworkexperiencesinhighschool.Asaresult,mostgraduatedwithnorealideaofwhattheywantedtodo.Compoundingtheproblemwastheiactthatmanystudentseitherdidnotseekordidnotqualifyforadultservicesthatmighthavehelpedthementeracareerthatmatchedtheirtalentsandinterests.
