Hi,I’mCarolinefrombluemooncommunications.Interpersonalcommunicationskillsareprobablythesinglebiggesttoolthatyoucanemploytomoveyoualongthecorporateladder.Now,obviously,yourinterpersonalcommunicationskillsshouldgohandinhandwithyourabilitytodoareallygreatjobandalsoastrongworkethic.Butsometimesyourabilitytodothejobandthestrongworkethicaren’tenoughjustontheirown.Imeanhowoftenhaveyoustoodinanofficewherethebosssaid,“OK,everybody,it’sallhandsondeckforthenextthreeweeks.Nodaysoff.”Andthen,suddenly,somebodymanagestogetadayoff.Averyniceday.That’sstronginterpersonalcommunicationskillsatplay.Andit’snotforyourbenefit,butitistothebenefitofthepersonwhoemployedthem.Or,Iknowanumberofpeoplewhosaid,“Well,I’vestoodinthecorneroftheroom,andI’vewatchedsomebodygetapromotionthatwasmypromotion.Well,everybodyintheroomknewthatIwastheonewhowouldtakeourcompanypasstheline.Ideservedthatpromotion.”Buthedidn’tgetthepromotion.Because,obviously,thepersonwhogotthepromotionhadbetterrelationshipwiththemanager,abettercommunication,betterinterpersonalcommunicationskills.Andthat’swhyit’ssoimportant.Soiftherewasonlyonethingthatyoucoulddotoimproveyourinterpersonalcommunicationskillstoday,well,Iwouldsay,remembertheoldadage,i.e.thatyoualwayscatchmorebeeswithhoneythanyouwillwithvinegar.
