condemnedcriminalswhosesphereofactivitiesisstrictlydelimited.
Suchstoriessetusthinking,wonderingwhatweshoulddoundersimilarcircumstances.Whatevents,whatexperiences,whatassociationsshouldwecrowdintothoselasthoursas
mortalbeings?
Whathappinessshouldwefindinreviewingthepast,whatregrets?
SometimesIhavethoughtitwouldbeanexcellentruletoliveeachdayasifweshoulddietomorrow.Suchanattitudewouldemphasizesharplythevaluesoflife.Weshouldlive
eachdaywithagentleness,avigor,andakeennessofappreciationwhichareoftenlostwhentimestretchesbeforeusintheconstantpanoramaofmoredaysandmonthsandyearsto
come.Therearethose,ofcourse,whowouldadopttheEpicureanmottoof"Eat,drink,andbemerry,"butmostpeoplewouldbechastenedbythecertaintyofimpendingdeath.
Instoriesthedoomedheroisusuallysavedatthelastminutebysomestrokeoffortune,butalmostalwayshissenseofvaluesischanged.hebecomesmoreappreciativeofthe
meaningoflifeanditspermanentspiritualvalues.Itahsoftenbeennotedthatthosewholive,orhavelived,intheshadowofdeathbringamellowsweetnesstoeverythingthey
do.
Mostofus,however,takelifeforgranted.Weknowthatonedaywemustdie,butusuallywepicturethatdayasfarinthefuture.Whenweareinbuoyanthealth,deathisallbut
unimaginable.Weseldomthinkofit.Thedaysstretchoutinanendlessvista.Sowegoaboutourpettytasks,hardlyawareofourlistlessattitudetowardlife.
Thesamelethargy,Iamafraid,characterizestheuseofallourfacultiesandsenses.Onlythedeafappreciatehearing,onlytheblindrealizethemanifoldblessingsthatliein
sight.Particularlydoesthisobservationapplytothosewhohavelostsightandhearinginadultlife.Butthosewhohaveneversufferedimpairmentofsightorhearingseldommake
thefullestuseoftheseblessedfaculties.Theireyesandearstakeinallsightsandsoundshazily,withoutconcentrationandwithlittleappreciation.Itisthesameoldstory
ofnotbeinggratefulforwhatwehaveuntilweloseit,ofnotbeingconsciousofhealthuntilweareill.
Ihaveoftenthoughtitwouldbeablessingifeachhumanbeingwerestrickenblindanddeafforafewdaysatsometimeduringhisearlyadultlife.Darknesswouldmakehimmore
appreciativeofsight;silencewouldtechhimthejoysofsound.
NowandthemIhavetestedmyseeingfriendstodiscoverwhattheysee.RecentlyIwasvisitedbyaverygoodfriendswhohad justreturnedfromalongwalkinthewoods,andI
askedherwhatshehadobserved.."Nothinginparticular,"shereplied.ImighthavebeenincreduloushadInotbeenaccustomedtosuchreposes,forlongagoIbecameconvinced
thattheseeingseelittle.
Howwasitpossible,Iaskedmyself,towalkforanhourthroughthewoodsandseenothingworthyofnote?
Iwhocannotseefindhundredsofthingstointerestmethroughmere
touch.Ifeelthedelicatesymmetryofaleaf.Ipassmyhandslovinglyaboutthesmoothskinofasilverbirch,ortherough,shaggybarkofapine.InthespringItouchthe
branchesoftreeshopefullyinsearchofabudthefirstsignofawakeningNatureafterherwinter'ssleep.Ifeelthedelightful,velvetytextureofaflower,anddiscoverits
remarkableconvolutions;andsomethingofthemiracleofNatureisrevealedtome.Occasionally,ifIamveryfortunate,Iplacemyhandgentlyonasmalltreeandfeelthehappy
quiverofabirdinfullsong.Iamdelightedtohavethecoolwatersofabrookrushthoughtmyopenfinger.Tomealushcarpetofpineneedlesorspongygrassismorewelcome
thanthemostluxuriousPersianrug.Tomethepageantofseasonsisathrillingandunendingdrama,theactionofwhichstreamsthroughmyfingertips.
Attimesmyheartcriesoutwithlongingtoseeallthesethings.IfIcangetsomuchpleasurefrommeretouch,howmuchmorebeautymustberevealedbysight.Yet,those who
haveeyesapparentlyseelittle.thepanoramaofcolorandactionwhichfillstheworldistakenforgranted.Itishuman,perhaps,toappreciatelittlethatwhichwehaveandto
longforthatwhichwehavenot,butitisagreatpitythatintheworldoflightthegiftofsightisusedonlyasamereconveniencesratherthanasameansofaddingfullness
tolife.
IfIwerethepresidentofauniversityIshouldestablishacompulsorycoursein"HowtoUseYourEyes".Theprofessorwouldtrytoshowhispupilshowtheycouldaddjoytotheir
livesbyreallyseeingwhatpassesunnoticedbeforethem.Hewouldtrytoawaketheirdormantandsluggishfaculties.
PerhapsIcanbestillustratebyimaginingwhatIshouldmostliketoseeifIweregiventheuseofmyeyes,say,forjustthreedays.AndwhileIamimagining,supposeyou,too,
setyourmindtoworkontheproblemofhowyouwoulduseyourowneyesifyouhadonlythreemoredaystosee.Ifwiththeon-comingdarknessofthethirdnightyouknewthatthe
sunwouldneverriseforyouagain,howwouldyouspendthosethreepreciousinterveningdays?
Whatwouldyoumostwanttoletyourgazerestupon?
I,naturally,shouldwantmosttoseethethingswhichhavebecomedeartomethroughmyyearsofdarkness.You,too,wouldwanttoletyoureyesrestonthethingsthathave
becomedeartoyousothatyoucouldtakethememoryofthemwithyouintothenightthatloomedbeforeyou.
If,bysomemiracle,Iweregrantedthreeseeingdays,tobefollowedbyarelapseintodarkness,Ishoulddividetheperiodintothreeparts.
The FirstDay
Onthefirstday,Ishouldwanttoseethepeoplewhosekindnessandgentlenessandcompanionshiphavemademylifeworthliving.FirstIshouldliketogazelonguponthefaceof
mydearteacher,Mrs.AnneSullivanMacy,whocametomewhenIwasachildandopenedtheouterworldtome.Ishouldwantnotmerelytoseetheoutlineofherface,sothatI
couldcherishitinmymemory,buttostudythatfaceandfindinitthelivingevidenceofthesympathetictendernessandpatiencewithwhichsheaccomplishedthedifficulttask
ofmyeducation.Ishouldliketoseeinhereyesthatstrengthofcharacterwhichhasenabledhertostandfirminthefaceofdifficulties,andthatcompassionforallhumanity
whichshehasrevealedtomesooften.
Idonotknowwhatitistoseeintotheheartofafriendthroughthat"Windowofthesoul",theeye.Icanonly"see"throughmyfingertipstheoutlineofaface.Icandetect
laughter,sorrow,andmanyotherobviousemotions.Iknowmyfriendsfromthefeeloftheirfaces.ButIcannotreallypicturetheirpersonalitiesbytouch.Iknowtheir
personalities,ofcourse,throughothermeans,throughthethoughtstheyexpresstome,throughwhateveroftheiractionsarerevealedtome.ButIamdeniedthatdeeper
understandingofthemwhichIamsurewouldcomethroughsightofthem,throughwatchingtheirreactionstovariousexpressedthoughtsandcircumstances,throughnotingthe
immediateandfleetingreactionsoftheireyesandcountenance.
FriendswhoareneartomeIknowwell,becausethroughthemonthsandyearstheyrevealthemselvestomeinalltheirphases;butofcasualfriendsIhaveonlyanincomplete
impression,animpressiongainedfromahandclasp,fromspokenwordswhichItakefromtheirlipswithmyfingertips,orwhichtheytapintothepalmofmyhand.
Howmucheasier,howmuchmoresatisfyingitisforyouwhocanseetograspquicklytheessentialqualitiesofanotherpersonbywatchingthesubtletiesofexpression,thequiver
ofamuscle,theflutterofahand.Butdoesiteveroccurtoyoutouseyoursighttoseeintotheinnernatureofafriendsoracquaintance/Donotmostofyouseeingpeople
graspcasuallytheoutwardfeaturesofafaceandletitgoatthat?
Forinstancecanyoudescribeaccuratelythefacesoffivegoodfriends?
someofyoucan,butmanycannot.Asanexperiment,Ihavequestionedhusbandsoflongstandingaboutthe
coloroftheirwives'eyes,andoftentheyexpressembarrassedconfusionandadmitthattheydonotknow.And,incidentally,itisachroniccomplaintofwivesthattheirhusbands
donotnoticenewdresses,newhats,andchangesinhouseholdarrangements.
Theeyesofseeingpersonssoonbecomeaccustomedtotheroutineoftheirsurroundings,andtheyactuallyseeonlythestartlingandspectacular.Buteveninviewingthemost
spectacularsightstheeyesarelazy.Courtrecordsrevealeverydayhowinaccurately"eyewitnesses"see.Agiveneventwillbe"seen"inseveraldifferentwaysbyasmany
witnesses.Someseemorethanothers,butfewseeeverythingthatiswithintherangeoftheirvision.
Oh,thethingsthatIshouldseeifIhadthepowerofsightforjustthreedays!
Thefirstdaywouldbeabusyone.Ishouldcalltomeallmydearfriendsandlooklongintotheirfaces,imprintinguponmymindtheoutwardevidencesofthebeautythatis
withinthem.Ishouldletmyeyesrest,too,onthefaceofababy,sothatIcouldcatchavisionoftheeager,innocentbeautywhichprecedestheindividual'sconsciousnessof
theconflictswhichlifedevelops.
