However,thereisanevenmoreinsidiouskindofpollutionthatparticularlyaffectsurbanareasandinvadesourdailylives,andthatisnoise.Burglaralarmsgoingoffatanytimeofthedayornightserveonlytoannoypassers-byandactuallyassistburglarstoburgle.Caralarmsconstantlyscreamatusinthestreetandareasourceofprofoundirritation.Arecentsurveyoftheeffectsofnoiserevealed(surprisingly?
)thatdogsbarkingincessantlyinthenightratedthehighestformofnoisepollutiononascalerangingfrom1to7.Thesurveyrevealedalargenumberofsourcesofnoisethatwereallydislike.Lawnmowerswhiningonasummersday,late-nightpartiesinapartmentblocks,noisyneighbors,vehiclesofalkinds,especiallylargecontainertrucksthunderingthroughquietvillage,planesandhelicoptersflyingoverhead,largeradioscarriedroundinpublicplacesandplayedatmaximumvolume.Newtechnologyhasalsomadeitsowncontributiontonoise.Alotofpeopleobjecttomobilephones,especiallywhentheyareusedinpublicplaceslikerestaurantsoronpublictransport.Loudconversationsonmobilephonesinvadeourthoughtsorinterruptthepleasureofmeetingfriendsforaquietchat.Thenoisepollutionsurveyrevealedaratherspurringandpossiblyamusingoldfashionedsourceofnoise.Itturnedouttobesnoring!
Menwerefoundtobetheworstoffenders.Itwasrevealedthat20%ofmenintheirmid-thirtiessnore.Thisfigurerisestoastaggering60%ofmenintheirsixties.Againstthesefigures,itwasfoundthatonly5%ofwomensnoreregularly,whiletherestareconstantlywokenorkeptawakebytheirtrumpetingpartners.Whateverthesourceofnoise,onethingiscertain:
silence,itseems,hasbecomeagoldenmemory.
