Messagesticksfunctionedasashortofneutral(中立的)areabetweentribes.Courierswereallowedtohavesafepassage,eveniftheycamefromanenemyland.Sometimes,themethodofdeliveryconsistedofasinglecouriercarryingamessagestickfromtribetotribe.Othermethodshadonetribebeginapassingprocessamongsttribes,witheachtribeusingitsowncouriertoconveythemessagetothenexttribe.
