UnlockingtheClimatePuzzle
解开气候之谜
(1)Lifehasprosperedonthisplanetfornearlyfourbillionyears.Inthattime,climatehadfluctuateddrastically,fromiceageslastingtensofthousandsofyearstoepochsofsteamyheat.Witheachchange,sundryspecieshavebenefitedandflourished.Othersadapted,faltered,ordied.Now,manyexpertsbelieve,humansareimperilingtheirownecologicalnichewiththethreatofglobalwarming.Thevaporousby-productsofcivilization,intheformofgreenhousegasessuchascarbondioxide(C0₂),havetrappedenoughheatintheatmospheretoraiseEarth'saveragesurfaceairtemperatureahalfdegreeCelsius(onedegreeFahrenheit)duringthiscentury.Ifthetrendcontinues,itcouldalterclimatepatternsworldwide-thawingglaciers,boostingsealevel,scorchingplainsintodeserts,andshiftingvegetationzones.

degreesand70degreesnorthlatitude-includingEurope,Russia,andthenorthernhalfoftheU.S.—wheremuchoftheworld'sindustrialgreenhousegasemissionsoriginate.Mostofthewarminghastakenplaceatnight-presumablybecauseincreasedcloudcovershadesthelandbydayandtrapsoutgoingheatatnight.ThegrowingseasoninthenorthernU.S.haslengthenedbyaboutaweek.

EvaporationofthisincomingflowleavesthebeltwithahighersaltcontentthantherestoftheNorthAtlantic,whichisfedbysubstantialfreshwaterrunofffrom
continentalwatersheds.Thebeltcoolsandbecomesdenserasitapproaches
Greenland,whereitsinks.Itthentravelsfarbelowthesurfaceinasouth-movingreturnflow.
