Koalas,withtheircute,expressivefacesandgentlebehavior,areafavoriteofanimal-loversallovertheworld.TheyexistonlyinAustralia,andintheearly1900s,ademandforcoatsmadefromthesoft,grayfuroftheseanimalsthreatenedtodestroytheentirespecies.Inthe1930stheAustraliangovernmentpassedlegislationtoprotecttheanimals,butthatdidn'tsolvetheproblem.Sincethen,theclearingoflandfordevelopmenthasdisplacedlargenumbersofkoalasandresultedinanevengreaterthreattothesurvivalofthespecies.
Luckily,asurbandevelopmentcontinuestospread,someAustralianconstructioncompaniesaretryingtofindwaystobalancetheissues.Theyareworkingtocreatenewhousingforhumans,whilegivingprioritytoprotectingthehabitatofthekoalas.ThedevelopersofKoalaBeachEstatesonthenorthcoastofNewSouthWaleshavemanagedtodojustthat.They'vebeenabletofollowthedictatesofanecologicallysensitivebuildingprogram,whilealsoprovidinganattractivelivingenvironmentforpeople.
Workontheprojectbeganin1993withathoroughsurveyofthelocalkoalapopulation.First,aresearcherfortheAustralianKoalaFoundationfittedkoalasintheareawithradiotransmitters.Theinformationgatheredbytheresearchershowedwhichkoalaswerepermanentresidentsandwhichwerevisitors,andalsowhichareasoftheproposeddevelopmentevenwhichspecifictreeswereusedbythekoalas.Asaresultofthisstudy,theentirehousingdevelopmentwasdesignedaroundthekoalashabitats.
Otherkoala-friendlycomponentswereincludedatKoalaBeachEstates.Dogsandcatswerebannedfromthedevelopmentbecausetheysometimeskillkoalas.Plannersalsoprovided"trafficcalmingelementssuchasspeedpreventionmethodsandwarningsignstoprotecttheanimalsfromcars.Sincekoalashavefavoritepathsbetweenfoodtrees,allfenceswereraised30centimetersabovethegroundtoallowthemtopasseasilyunderneath.Ropeswereplacedinswimmingpoolssokoalascouldclimboutiftheyfellin.Anenormousamountofcarefulplanningwentintotheproject,whichresultedinapleasantcoincidence;twenty-fiveotherrareorendangeredspeciesincludingbats,frogs,andbirdsultimatelychoseKoalaBeachastheirhome.Thisbonushasincreasedhomeownersexcitementoverthisoutstandingwildlife-friendlycommunityevenmorethanexpected.
