“艾尔德夫人?
”在卡萝尔登记完了后,前台接待员看着她。
“你是卡萝尔·艾尔德夫人么?
”
"Yes."
“是的。
”
"Messageforyou."Heturnedaroundandgotitfromapigeonhole."Atelegram."
“有给你的信息。
”他转过身,从一个分类架上拿到它。
“一份电报。
”
"Thankyou."CarolglancedatTheresewithalittleliftofherbrowsbeforesheopenedit.Shereadit,frowning,thenturnedtotheclerk.
“谢谢。
”卡萝尔在打开之前,稍微抬了一下眉毛看着特雷泽。
她读着电报,一边皱着眉,然后面向前台接待员。
"Where'stheBelvedereHotel?

前台接待员给她指引。
"I'vegottopickupanothertelegram,"CarolsaidtoTherese."WanttowaitherewhileIgetit?

她依然眉头紧锁。
“我要看了电报才知道。
艾比只是说在贝尔韦代雷有份发给我的电报。
”
"ShallIhavethebagstakenup?

“我把包提上去么?
”
"Well--justwait.Thecarisparked."
“恩--就等着吧。
车子停在停车地方了。
”
"Whycan'tIcomewithyou?
"
“我为什么不能跟你一起去呢?

"Ofcourse,ifyouwantto.Let'swalk.It'sonlyacoupleofblocksaway."

走吧。
反正也只有几条街的距离。

Carolwalkedquickly.Thecoldwassharp.Thereseglancedaroundherattheflat,orderlylookingtown,andrememberedCarol'ssayingthatSaltLakeCitywasthecleanesttownintheUnitedStates.WhentheBelvederewasinsight,Carolsuddenlylookedatherandsaid,"Abby'sprobablyhadabrainstormanddecidedtoflyoutandjoinus."
卡萝尔走得很快。
寒冷刺骨。
特雷泽看着她周围的公寓,看起来整洁有序的城镇,想起卡萝尔的话--盐湖城是美国最干净的城镇。
当贝尔韦代雷出现在眼前的时候,卡萝尔忽然看着她说,“艾比可能一时头脑发热,决定要坐飞机过来,加入我们。
”
IntheBelvedere,ThereseboughtanewspaperwhileCarolwenttothedesk.WhenThereseturnedtoher,Carolwasjustloweringthetelegramafterreadingit.Therewasastunnedexpressiononherface.ShecameslowlytowardTherese,anditflashedthroughTherese'smindthatAbbywasdead,thatthissecondmessagewasfromAbby'sparents.
在贝尔韦代雷旅馆里,当卡萝尔走向前台时,特雷泽买了一张报纸。
当特雷泽向她走过去的时候,卡萝尔已经读完电报了,正放低报纸。
她脸上有着一丝惊讶的表情。
她慢慢地朝着特雷泽走去。
特雷泽脑子里忽然闪过一个念头--艾比死了,这第二份电报是艾比父母发过来的。
"What'sthematter?
"Thereseasked.
“怎么了?
”特雷泽问。
"Nothing.Idon'tknowyet."Carolglancedaroundandslappedthetelegramagainstherfingers."I'vegottomakeaphonecall.Itmighttakeafewminutes."Shelookedatherwatch.

我还不知道。
”卡萝尔看了看周围,用手指弹了弹那份电报。
“我得打个电话。
可能得花上几分钟,”她看着她的表。
Itwasaquartertotwo.ThehotelclerksaidshecouldprobablygetNewJerseyinabouttwentyminutes.Meanwhile,Carolwantedadrink.Theyfoundabarinthehotel.

旅馆前台说大约20分钟左右她可能能接通新泽西州。
同时,卡萝尔想喝一杯。
她们在旅馆里找了一个喝酒的吧台。

卡萝尔微笑着。

Theresewalkedupanddown,inthelobbywhileCarolwasinthetelephonebooth.ShesawCarolnodslowlyseveraltimes,sawherfumbletogetacigarettelighted,butbythetimeTheresegottheretolightitforher,Carolhaditandmotionedheraway.Caroltalkedforthreeorfourminutes,thencameoutandpaidherbill.
当卡萝尔在电话隔间里的时候,特雷泽在大厅里走来走去。
她看见卡萝尔慢慢地点了几次头,看见她笨拙地点着烟,但是当特雷泽到那要给她点烟的时候,卡萝尔已经把烟点着了,动作示意她走开。
卡萝尔讲电话讲了3到4分钟的样子,然后走出来,付了电话费。
"Whatisit,Carol?
"
“怎么回事,卡萝尔?
”
Carolstoodlookingoutthedoorwayofthehotelforamoment."NowwegototheTempleSquareHotel,"shesaid.
卡萝尔站着,从旅馆门口那看出去看了一会。
“现在我们去教堂广场旅馆,”她说。
Theretheypickedupanothertelegram.Carolopeneditandglancedatit,andtoreitupastheywalkedtothedoor.
在那她们收到了另一个电报。
卡萝尔打开,看了一眼,当她们走到门口时候,就把电报给撕了。
"Idon'tthinkwe'llstayheretonight,"Carolsaid."Let'sgobacktothecar."
“我想今晚我们不会待在这了,”卡萝尔说。
“我们回到车那。
”
TheywentbacktothehotelwhereCarolhadgottenthefirsttelegram.
她们回到了卡萝尔收到第一份电报的那家旅馆。
Theresesaidnothingtoher,butshefeltsomethinghadhappenedthatmeantCarolhadtogetbackEastimmediately.Caroltoldtheclerktocanceltheirroomreservation.
特雷泽没跟她说什么,但是她感觉发生了什么事,这事让卡萝尔不得不马上往东走回。
卡萝尔告诉前台要取消她们预订的房间。
"I'dliketoleaveaforwardingaddressincaseofanyothermessages,"shesaid."That'stheBrownPalace,Denver."

她把车完全停下来了,拿过地图,看着。

“去丹佛怎么样?
”特雷泽问。
"Idon'twanttogotoDenver."Carolfoldedthemapandstartedthecar.
“我不想去丹佛,”卡萝尔叠好地图,启动车子。
"Well,we'lldoitanyway.Lightmeacigarette,willyou,darling?
Andwatchoutforthenextplacetogetsomethingtoeat."
“好吧,不管怎样我们去那吧,给我点支烟,好么,亲爱的?
留意一下这一路有没有吃东西的地方。
”
Theyhadn'thadlunchyet,anditwasafterthree.Theyhadtalkedaboutthisstretchlastnight,thestraightroadwestfromSaltLakeCityacrosstheGreatSaltLakeDesert.Theyhadplentyofgas,Theresenoticed,andprobablythecountrywasn'tentirelydeserted,butCarolwastired.Theyhadbeendrivingsincesixthatmorning.Caroldrovefast.
都3点多了,她们都还没吃午饭。
昨晚她们就谈论过这个延伸老长的地方,盐湖有一条向西的直路,穿过大盐湖沙漠。
她们有大量的汽油,特雷泽注意到,也许那地方并不是完全荒无人烟,但是卡萝尔疲倦了。

Theycametoagas-stationcafestandingallbyitselflikeawartontheflatlandscape.Theymighthavebeenthefirstpeoplewhohadstoppedthereindays.Carollookedatheracrossthewhiteoilclothtable,andsankbackinthestraightchair.Beforeshecouldspeak,anoldmaninanaproncamefromthekitcheninback,andtoldthemtherewasnothingbuthamandeggs,sotheyorderedhamandeggsandcoffee.ThenCarollightedacigaretteandleanedforward,lookingdownatthetable.
她们来到一个可以加油的咖啡馆,它整个看起来像结疤一样矗立在平坦的大地上。
