THEINTERNATIONALLIFE-SAVINGAPPLIANCECODE
PREAMBLE
1ThepurposeofthisCodeistoprovideinternationalstandardsforlife-savingappliancesrequiredbyChapterIIIoftheInternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLifeatSea(SOLAS),1974.2Onandafter1July1998,therequirementsofthisCodewillbemandatoryundertheInternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLifeatSea(SOLAS),1974,asamended.AnyfutureamendmenttotheCodewillbeadoptedandbroughtintoforceinaccordancewiththeprocedurelaiddowninArticleVIIIofthatConvention.
CHAPTERI-GENERAL
1.1Definitions
1.1.1ConventionmeanstheInternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLifeatSea,1974,asamended.
1.1.2Effectiveclearingoftheshipistheabilityofthefree-fall
lifeboattomoveawayfromtheshipafterfree-falllaunchingwithoutusingitsengine.
1.1.3istherateofchangeofvelocityexperiencedFree-fallacceleration
bytheoccupantsduringlaunchingofafree-falllifeboat.1.1.4Free-fallcertificationheightisthegreatestlaunchingheightfor
whichthelifeboatistobeapproved,measuredfromthestillwatersurfacetothelowestpointonthelifeboatwhenthelifeboatisinthelaunchconfiguration.
1.1.5Launchingrampangleistheanglebetweenthehorizontalandthelaunchrailofthelifeboatinitslaunchingpositionwiththeshiponevenkeel.
1.1.6Launchingramplengthisthedistancebetweenthestemofthe
lifeboatandthelowerendofthelaunchingramp.
1.1.7RegulationmeansaregulationcontainedintheAnnextotheConvention.
1.1.8Requiredfree-fallheightisthegreatestdistancemeasuredfrom
thestillwatersurfacetothelowestpointonthelifeboatwhenthelifeboatisinthelaunchconfigurationandtheshipisinitslightestseagoingcondition.
1.1.9Retro-reflectivematerialisamaterialwhichreflectsinthe
oppositedirectionabeamoflightdirectedonit.
1.1.10Water-entryangleistheanglebetweenthehorizontalandthe
launchrailofthelifeboatwhenitfirstentersthewater.1.1.11ThetermsusedinthisCodehavethesamemeaningasthosedefinedinRegulationIII/3.
1.2Generalrequirementsforlife-savingappliances
1.2.1Paragraph1.2.2.7appliestolife-savingappliancesonallships.1.2.2Unlessexpresslyprovidedotherwiseorunless,intheopinionoftheAdministrationhavingregardtotheparticularvoyagesonwhichtheshipisconstantlyengaged,otherrequirementsareappropriate,alllife-savingappliancesprescribedinthispartshall:
.1beconstructedwithproperworkmanshipandmaterials;.2notbedamagedinstowagethroughouttheairtemperaturerange-30?

.3iftheyarelikelytobeimmersedinseawaterduringtheiruse,operatethroughouttheseawatertemperaturerange-1?

.5whereexposedtosunlight,beresistanttodeterioration;

.7befittedwithretro-reflectivematerialwhereitwillassistindetectionandinaccordancewiththerecommendationsoftheOrganization;.8iftheyaretobeusedinaseaway,becapableofsatisfactoryoperationinthatenvironment;
.9beclearlymarkedwithapprovalinformationincludingtheAdministrationwhichapprovedit,andanyoperationalrestrictions;and.10whereapplicable,beprovidedwithelectricalshortcircuitprotectiontopreventdamageorinjury.
1.2.3TheAdministrationshalldeterminetheperiodofacceptabilityoflife-savingapplianceswhicharesubjecttodeteriorationwithage.Suchlife-savingappliancesshallbemarkedwithameansfordeterminingtheirageorthedatebywhichtheymustbereplaced.Permanentmarkingwithadateofexpiryisthepreferredmethodofestablishingtheperiodofacceptability.Batteriesnotmarkedwithanexpirationdatemaybeusediftheyarereplacedannually,orinthecaseofasecondarybattery(accumulator),iftheconditionoftheelectrolytecanbereadilychecked.
CHAPTERII-PERSONALLIFE-SAVINGAPPLIANCES
2.1Lifebuoys
2.1.1Lifebuoyspecification
Everylifebuoyshall:
.1haveanouterdiameterofnotmorethan800mmandaninnerdiameterofnotlessthan400mm;
.2beconstructedofinherentlybuoyantmaterial;itshallnotdependuponrushes,corkshavingsorgranulatedcork,anyotherloosegranulatedmaterialoranyaircompartmentwhichdependsoninflationforbuoyancy;.3becapableofsupportingnotlessthan14.5kgofironinfreshwaterforaperiodof24h;
.4haveamassofnotlessthan2.5kg;
.5notsustainburningorcontinuemeltingafterbeingtotallyenvelopedinafireforaperiodof2s;
.6beconstructedtowithstandadropintothewaterfromtheheightatwhichitisstowedabovethewaterlineinthelightestseagoingconditionor30m,whicheveristhegreater,withoutimpairingeitheritsoperatingcapabilityorthatofitsattachedcomponents;
.7ifitisintendedtooperatethequickreleasearrangementprovidedfortheself-activatedsmokesignalsandself-ignitinglights,haveamasssufficienttooperatethequickreleasearrangement;and
.8befittedwithagrablinenotlessthan9.5mmindiameterandnotlessthan4timestheoutsidediameterofthebodyofthebuoyinlength.Thegrab
