Overall,Idisagreewiththeopinionexpressed.Iwouldliketobeginbypointingoutthat‘traditionalskillsandwaysoflife’arenotautomaticallyofonecountry,butofacultureorcommunity.34
Inmanyways,thehistoryofcivilizationinthehistoryoftechnology:
fromthediscoveryoffiretotheinventionofthewheeltothedevelopmentoftheInternet,wehavebeenmovingonfrompreviouswaysofdoingthings.Sometechnologies,suchasweaponsofmassdestruction,areofnegativeimpact.Others,suchasmedicaladvances,positivelyhelppeopletolivebetterorlonger,andsoverymuchhelptraditionalwaysoflife.Surely,fewpeoplewouldseektopreservesuchtraditionsaslivingincaves. 87
Interestingly,technologycanpositivelycontributetothekeepingaliveoftraditionalskillsandwaysoflife.Forexample,thepopulationsofsomeislandsaretoosmalltohavenormalschools.Ratherthanbreakingupfamiliesbysendingchildrentothemainland,educationauthoritieshavebeenabletousetheInternettodeliverschoolingonline.Inaddition,theInternet,andmodernrefrigerationtechniques,arebeingusedtokeepalivethetraditionalskillsofproducingsalmon;itcannowbeorderedfrom,anddeliveredto,anywhereintheworld. 87
Inconclusion,withoutsuggestingthatalltechnologyisnecessarilygood,Ithinkitisbynomeans‘pointless’,inanyway,totrytokeeptraditionsalivewithtechnology.Weshouldnotignoretechnology,becauseitcanbeourfriendandsupportourwayoflife. 46
