Inameta-analysisof180studiesacrosssixcountriesthatinvolvedsome1,080participants-allofwhomhada“formaldiagnosisofamentaldisorder,includingdepressionandanxiety,”accordingtonewsreleaseonthefindings-researchersfoundthattheparticipants’mentalhealthimprovedwith“movement-basedyoga,”withthebenefits“beingincremental(递增的)withtheamountofyogatheypracticed,”theysaid.
Movement-basedyogawasdefinedbytheresearchersas“anyformofyogawhereparticipantsarephysicallyactiveatleast50percentofthetime,thatis,formsofyogathatemphasizeholdingposesandflowingthroughseriesofposes,”accordingtothenewsrelease.
“Asself-isolationcontinuesandpeoplefindthemselvesworkingfromhomeandunabletophysicallycatchupwiththeirfriendsandfamily,we’relikelytoseemorepeoplefeellonelyanddisconnected,”saidleadresearcherandUniversityofSouthAustraliaPh.D.candidateJacintaBrinsley,inastatement.“Exercisehasalwaysbeenagreatstrategyforpeoplestrugglingwiththesefeelingsasitboostsbothmoodandhealth.Butasgymsandexerciseclassesofallkindsarenowclosed—evenjoggingwithafriendisstronglydiscouraged—peoplearelookingforoptions,andthisiswhereyogacanhelp.”
Ourresearchshowsthatmovement-basedyogaimprovedsymptomsofdepression(orimprovedmentalhealth)forpeoplelivingwitharangeofmentalhealthconditions,includinganxiety,post-traumatic(创伤后)stressandmajordepression.“So,it’sverygoodnewsforpeoplestrugglingintimesofuncertainty,”Brinsleyadded.
