UnderstandingAcademicLectures
Goodmorning,everybody.
Nowattheuniversityyou,asstudents,areoftencalledontoperformmanytypesoflisteningtasks:
listeninginagroupdiscussion,listeningtoateacheronaone-to-onebasis,andlisteningtoacademiclectures.
SowhatI'mgoingtotalkabouttodayiswhatalistenerneedstobeabletodoinordertocomprehendanacademiclectureefficiently.
OK.Whatdoyouneedtodoinordertounderstandthelecture?
NowtherearefourthingsthatI'mgoingtotalkabout.
Thefirstthingisthatyouneedtobeawareofallofthepartsofthelanguagethatcarrymeaning.
Youallknowthatwordscarrymeaning.
Soyou'vegottobeawareofthevocabularyofthelanguage,buttherearesomeotherfeatures.
Foronething,youneedtobeawareofstress.
Letmegiveyouanexample.
"Iwenttothebar."
"Iwenttothebar."
Itmakesadifference.
Inthesecondexample,I'mstressingthefactthatitwasmeandnotsomeoneelsesothatthismeansstresshassomemeaning.
Nowthenextthingyoumightwanttolistenforisintonation.
Forexample,ifIsay"Hecame.""Hecame?
"
Therearetwodifferentmeanings.
Oneisastatement,theotheroneisaquestion.
Andanotherthingyouneedtolistenforisrhythm.
Forinstance,"Canyousee,Mary?
"VS"CanyouseeMary?
"Dadadadada.Dadadadada.
Thosetwomeansomethingdifferent.
Inthefirstone,theyaretalkingdirectlytoMary,whilethesecondonemeans
"CanyouseeMaryoverthere?
"
Nowthenextthingyoumustdowhenyoulistenisthatyouneedtoaddinformationthatthelecturerexpectsyoutoadd.
Alllecturersassumethattheysharesomeinformationwiththeiraudienceandthattheiraudiencedoesnotneedthemtoexplaineveryword.
Andlistenershaveanabilitytoaddthisinformationduetotwosourcesofinformation.
Thatis:
1)theirknowledgeofaparticularsubject;and2)theirknowledgeorexperienceoftheworld.
Soremember,listeningisnotamatterofjustabsorbingthespeaker'swords-thelistenerhastodomorethanthat.
Thelistenerisnotataperecorder,absorbingthespeaker'swordsandputtingthemintohisorherbrain.
Rather,listeninginvolveshearingthespeaker'swordsandreinterpretingthem,addinginformationifnecessary.
Sothemeaningisnotinthewordalone,ratheritisinthepersonwhousesitorrespondstoitsothatthesecondthingthatalistenermustdo-addinformationthatthelecturerassumesthattheyshare.
OK.Thethirdthingthatalistenerneedstodo,andthisistomethemostimportantthingofall,andthat'stopredictasyoulisten.

Maybethere'snoiseoutsideandyoucan'thearme.
Maybeyou'reinthebackoftheroomandyoucan'thearallthatwell.
Maybethemicrophonedoesn'twork.
Maybethere'snoiseinsideyourhead.
BythatImeanmaybeyou'rethinkingofsomethingelse.
Andthenallofasudden,you'llremember"Oh,I'vegottolisten."
Bybeingabletopredictduringthelecture,youcanjustkeeplisteningtothelectureandnotlosetheideaofwhat'sgoingon.
Sopredictingisimportanttohelpyouovercomeoutsidenoiseandinsidenoise.
Andanotherreasonthatpredictingisimportantisbecauseitsavesyoutime.
Nowwhenyoulistenyouneedtimetothinkabouttheinformation,relateittooldideas,takenotes,andifyou'reonlykeepingupwithwhatI'msayingorwhatthelecturer'ssaying,youhavenotimetodothat.
AndI'llbetalotofyouarehavingthatproblemrightnowbecauseit'ssohardjusttofolloweverythingI'msayingthatyoudon'thavetimetonotedownideas.
Sopredictingsavesyoutime.
