1.Introduction
BlueLagoonResortisa104rooms’resortlocatedononeofthebestbeachesonLagunaIsland.Theresortissetagainstabackdropoffinepowder-whitesand,crystal-clearwatersandemeraldhills.TheresortisdesignedasamoderninterpretationoftraditionalMalayarchitecture,thelow-riseresortblendsharmoniouslywiththeenvironment,makingitoneoftheloveliestresortsintheisland.BothLow-costandgreenconceptarecoreideasofourbuildingsforthesakeofeco-systemandeconomic.
1.1BuildingMaterial
Woodistheresort'smainbuildingmaterials.Woodhasagoodeffectofsoundinsulate.Manykindsofgeneralmaterials,suchasrock,thatch,concreteandmetalemitsomeradiations,butthewooddoesnot.Theinternalstructureofwoodisporous,soitcandrawtoomuchmoistureintheair.Itisgoodforisolatedthechaosmagneticfieldfromtheoutside.
Woodbuildingmaterialsaresteady,durablewithgoodanti-corrosion,moistureproofandpestcontrolcharacteristics.Afterthepropercoattreatment,thesurfacecanbealongtimetokeepthebeautifulappearance.
1.2Roof
ThegreenroofofourresortisoneofmajorfeaturesassociatedwithMaldives.A2005studybyBradBassoftheUniversityofTorontoshowedthatgreenroofscanalsoreduceheatlossandenergyconsumptioninwinterconditions.Inarecentstudyfoundthataddinggreenroofswillhelpkeeptemperaturesdown.Itincreasesrooflifespan,reducestormwaterrunoffandfilterpollutantsandcarbondioxideoutoftheair.Furthermore,italsohelpstoinsulatebuildingsfromsound;filterpollutantsoutofrainwaterandincreasewildlifehabitatthere.
1.3Windows
WechoosePVsolarglasswindowinourresort.Highqualitycansubstantiallydecreasesolarlightreflection.Solarlightcanbealmostabsorbedtotallybysolarglassitself.ThistypeofglasscanmeettherequirementfromUSA,JapanandEU.Ithasapatternedsurfacewiththickness3.2mmto8mmandsolartransmittance≥92.6%+0.7%.
2.ElectricalSystems
Theelectricalsystemsofourresortconsistoffivesystems:
tideelectricalsystem,solarpowersystem,concentratingsolarpowersystem,traditionalelectricalpowersystem,andemergencypowersystem.
2.1TideSystem
Becauseofthelocationadvantageofourresort,basedontheprincipleofgreenandrecycling,wedecidetousethewaterpowerfromtheseatoproduceelectricpower.Thebasicworkingprincipleisthattostoretheseawaterinreservoirwhentiderisesandtodrawoffthewaterwhentideebbs.Byusingthedropbetweentiderisingandebbtopushthewaterturbine,theimpellersrotateandthegeneratortransformskineticenergyintoelectricenergy.Finally,thesystemtransportstheelectricenergyproducedbytidetoresortthroughwiresforusage.
2.2SolarPowerSystem
Theaverageannualtemperatureintheislandis28°C,sothesolarpowerisfavorabletouseforourresort.Inordertomaximizetheconnectareaandabsorbthesolarpowertothegreatestdegree,theshapeofmaterialusedtoabsorbsolarpowerisincliningandthecolorofthemisdark.Whenthesunshines,thephotovoltaicstakeoverthesolarpowerandtransformthesolarpowerintoelectricenergy.Thentransporttheelectricenergytochargecontroller.Thentheelectricenergyisdividedintotwoparts:
theoneisusedfordirectcurrent;theotherisstoredinbatteriesthenuseforalternatingcurrentthroughinverter,asFigure1shows.
2.3ConcentratingSolarPowerSystem
ThebasicworkingprincipleofCSPisthatitusestheparabolicmirrortogatherthesunlightinpipesfulfilledwithcombinedoil,andthentransporttheoilheatedin400°Fintotheheatconverter.Thecirculatingwaterheatedbytheenergycanproducesteamusedtopushtheturbinetorollandgeneratortooperate.Comparedwiththesolarpowersystem,CSPreducesthequantityofmaterialusesandimprovetheefficiencyofsystemtransform,whichis28%.However,CSPonlycanbeusedintheplaceswithabundantsunlight.
2.4TraditionalElectricalPowerSystem
Astheelectricalpowerproducedtheenvironmentallygreenenergymentionedaboveisnotverystableandcontrollable,andtheshortageofelectricitymayhappeninsomespecificperiodoftime,thetraditionalelectricalpowerisalsoimportantandnecessaryinordertoguaranteethenormaloperationofourresort.Weconstructthepowerdistributionsysteminresortalmosteverywhere.Oncethepowerisaccessibletouse,allequipmentandfacilitiesareavailable.Itisthemoststableandadequatepowersource.
2.5EmergencyPowerSystem
Inapublicservicearea,emergencypowerisnecessarilyimportanttoensureguestssafety,normalactivitiesandoperation,whentheregularelectricalpowersystemsareunavailable.Ouremergencypowersuppliesandequipmentincludegeneratorsandbatteriestoprovidelightinganduninterruptiblepowerforartificialillumination,firedetectionandalarmsystems,firepumps,andpublicsafetycommunicationsystems.
3.LightingSystems
Ourresortusesthelightingdevicesandsystemsbasedonenergysavingforthepurposeofsourcereductionandenvironmentprotection.Ontheotherhand,wealsoconsidertheatmosphereoftheroomsandotherpublicareas,andtheguestsandemployeesfeeling,whendesigningthelightingsystem.Becausetheguestroomsarethemajorareatohavehugedemandofelectricity,wefocusontoimprovetheelectricalsysteminguestrooms.
3.1GuestRoom
Droplightisusuallycomposedbythreeormorelightbulbs,soitisthehighestelectricityuserintheroom.Asaresult,wedecidetouniformlyuse220VsinglespirallampswithLEDintheguestroomsbothtoreducetheusesofelectricalpowerandthematerialcostofourresortbecauseofthelongerlifetimeofthelamps.
4.WaterandWastewaterSystems
4.1RainwaterHarvesting
Rainwateriscollectedandstoredindifferenttypesoftanks(madeofsteel,ferro-cement,HighDensityPolyethylene-HDPEandfiberglass)ofvarioussizes.Eachislandhasbothcommunitytanksandprivatehouseholdtanks.TheMinistryofHealthwiththeco-operationofvariousfundingagencieshasprovidedsince1984morethan1,700fibrocementrainwatertanksof10m3capacityandmorethan3,000tanksof2.5m3capacity.
4.2GroundwaterResources
AlthoughMaldiveshasfewsurfacewaterresources,intheformoffreshwaterlakesknownasKulhis,andrainwaterisharvestedandstoredinhouseholdandcommunityrainwatertanks,thevastmajorityofthecountry’swaterresourcesarestoredasgroundwater.
Thecountry’sislandsareverylow-lyingandthewatertableisfoundatveryshallowdepths-usuallynomorethan2mbelowthegroundsurface.Inaddition,thefreshwaterlensonislandsisusuallyverythin.Thethicknessofthislensdependsupontherateatwhichitisreplenishedbyrainfall,thesizeoftheisland,thesoilpermeability,ratesofabstractionandchangesinsealevel.
4.3SewageTreatment
Inordertofurtherconservewaterandreducetheimpactonthesurroundingenvironment,ourresortwillbuildasmall-scalesewagetreatmentsystem.Wewillonlyusetheprimarytreatment forthemoneysaving.Rawsewageenterssystemvialargeundergroundpipes.Itisinitiallyfilteredtoremovelarge,non-biodegradablesolidsbypassagethroughscreens.Theresultantdebrisisdepositedindumpstersandhauledawaytothelandfill.Theliquidcomponentofthesewageispipedtoalargetankforgritremovalwherelargeparticlesofsandandgritsettleout.Resultantwatercanberecyclingusedinthetoilet.Thismethodcanreducealargeamountofwaterwastefortheresort.
5.LaundrySystems
5.1FacilitiesandEquipmentEmployed
OurHotelhas104guestrooms.Laundryprocessedincludesbedding(sheets,blankets,pillowcases)andtowels(fromroomsandswimmingpoolarea),bathmatsandrobes.Thelaundryroomconsistsoftwo80poundsUnivacCommercialWashersandtwo120poundsUnivacCommercialDryers.Twentyloadsperdaywerelaunderedonaverage,foratotalof1,600poundsperday.Traditionallaunderingwasconductedforonemonth,followedbyozonelaunderingforasecondmonth.
TheozonesysteminstalledforthisstudywasaClearWaterTechEcoTexsystemconsistingofanECO2ozonegenerator(maximumozoneoutputratingof8g/hat3percentconcentrationbyweight),aSequalTechnologiesWorkhorse8cOxygenConcentrator,anAeroquip100AmbientAirOzoneMonitor,andanEcoTexDiffuserinst
