mygenerationhasbeenveryfortunatetowitnessandparticipateinthehistorictransformationofchinathathasmadesomanychangesinthepast20,30years.irememberthatintheyearof1990,wheniwasgraduatingfromcollege,iwasapplyingforajobinthesalesdepartmentofthefirstfive-starhotelinbeijing,greatwallsheratonitsstillthere.soafterbeinginterrogatedbythisjapanesemanagerforahalfanhour,hefinallysaid,so,missyang,doyouhaveanyquestionstoaskme?

13youngworkersintheirlateteensandearly20scommittedsuicide,justonebyonelikecausingacontagiousdisease.buttheydiedbecauseofalldifferentpersonalreasons.butthiswholeincidentarousedahugeoutcryfromsocietyabouttheisolation,bothphysicalandmental,ofthesemigrantworkers.
forthosewhodoreturnbacktothecountryside,theyfindthemselvesverywelcomelocally,becausewiththeknowledge,skillsandnetworkstheyhavelearnedinthecities,withtheassistanceoftheinternet,theyreabletocreatemorejobs,upgradelocalagricultureandcreatenewbusinessinthelessdevelopedmarket.soforthepastfewyears,thecoastalareas,theyfoundthemselvesinashortageoflabor.
