随着全球化进程深入和我国改革开放步伐的加快以及2022年北京冬奥会的即将召开,我国与各个国家和地区的交流活动日渐增多。
作为一种媒介和信息交流工具,英语的重要性日益凸显。
为了方便外国友人在中国的生活,中国很多公共场所采用了汉英双语的公示语。
双语公示语是应用在公共场所的一种特殊文体,起着指示、提示、限制、警示作用,是一个地区对内和对外的窗口,因此双语公示语的准确翻译十分重要。
然而在一些公共场所仍然能看到翻译质量不高的标识,不仅影响实际交流,也会严重损害中国的对外形象。
本文通过对北京、太原等城市进行实地调查及查阅相关文献获得详尽语料,分析了公示语翻译的特点并试用中介语理论、错误分析法剖析国内英语公示语的错误,对错误进行了四种分类,分别为拼写错误、词汇错误、语法错误、语用错误,由此概括了可能导致错误的四种原因:
翻译者和标语制作者的原因、思维模式不同、文化知识的贫乏、语用失误。
最后针对这些错误提出相应的对策。

Abstract
Withtheaccelerated pace of globalizationandreform and openingup in China,theapproachingconveneof2022WinterOlympicsinBeijing,Chinahasbeenratheractiveininternationalexchange.Asakindofmediaandinformationconversiontools,Englishcountsformuch.InordertomakesureforeignersenjoythecomfortablelifeinChina,quiteafewEnglishpublicsignshavebeenusedinpublicplaces.
Thepublicsignisaspecificvarietyofwritingformwhichisusedforconveyinginformationinpublicplaces.It’sjustlikeawindowtoaregion.Asaconsequence,thetranslationofpublicsignsisofgreatsignificance.Nevertheless,it’slikelytoseeagoodmanyEnglishpublicsignswithpoorqualityinpublicplaces.Itcouldnotonlybroadenthegapincommunicationbetweencountries,butalsoaffecttheimageofChina.
BasedontheconclusionandanalysisofampleerrorexamplesinsomecitiesofChina(Beijing,Taiyuan,etc),thethesisprovidesadiscussionaboutthefeatureofC-Etranslationofpublicsigns,interlanguagetheoryanderroranalysis,includingfourtypesoferrors(spelling,lexical,grammatical,pragmaticerrors)andcausesoferrors(translator’sandsignsmakers’issue,differentthinkingpatterns,lackofculturalknowledge,pragmaticfailures).atlast,theauthorbringsupsomeimpactfulmeasuresandstrategiestoimproveEnglishpublicsigns’quality.

1.Introduction

With theaccelerated pace of globalizationandreform and openingup in Chinaandwiththeapproachingconveneof2022WinterOlympicsinBeijing,Chinahasbeenratheractiveininternationalexchange.Asakindofmediaandinformationconversiontools,Englishcountsformuch.InordertomakesureforeignersenjoythecomfortablelifeinChina,quiteafewEnglishpublicsignshavebeenusedinpublicplaces.Thepublicsignplaysavitalpartinmanyaspects,suchasregulatingsocialbehaviors,preventingcrimeandsoon.Infact,ithasbecomeabasiccomponentofcontemporarysociallife.
Generallyspeaking,publicinformationcouldbecommunicatedtoeveryone,includingilliteratesandforeignersviapublicsigns.Nonetheless,somepublicsignsinChinadon’tmeetthedemand.Thecauseofitissophisticated.Foronething,thestudyonitbeganrelativelylateandlackunifiedstandard.Fortheotherthing,wecan’tmakegooduseofthetranslationtheoryandapplyittothepracticeperfectly.Despiteit,theincorrectpubicsignsareharmfultoeveryone.Andalmosteverypublicplaceispollutedwithlow-qualityEnglishpublicsigns.ItcouldnotonlydodamagetodailycommunicationbutalsoChina’simage.ThethesisrevealsthisstartlingfactwithabundantexamplesextractedfromBeijingandTaiyuan’sadvertisements,billboard,newspapersandalsofromsomerelatedliteratures.Thethesisgivesadiscussionaboutpublicsigns’features,interlanguagetheoryanderroranalysis,includingfourcategoriesoferrors(spelling,lexical,grammatical,pragmaticerrors)andcausesoferrors(translator’sandsigns’makers’issue,lackofknowledge,differentmodeofthinking,pragmaticfailures).Atlast,theauthorbringsupsomeimpactfulmeasuresandstrategiestoimproveEnglishpublicsigns’quality.

2.LiteratureReview
2.1ErrorsandMistakes
Inthehistory,manylinguists,suchasEllisandCorderdevotedthemselvestodistinguishbetweenanerrorandamistake.Accordingly,it’sessentialtohaveaglimpseoftheirconclusionsonthesetwoterms.
Errorsandmistakes’disparitiesareasfollows:
Firstly,wehavetheabilitytofindandcorrectamistakebyourselves.Howeveritisn’tfitforanerror.Itmeansifyoucheckyourworkenoughtimes,youwilldiscoveryourmistakesinit.Buttoerrors,itturnedoutjusttheopposite.
Secondly,anerrorisdependedontheinternalfactors.Inotherwords,thechancesaretentoonethaterrorwouldrepeatedlyoccurwhenyouwork;themistakewouldjustappearonceinawhile.
Last,amistakeisinthelevelofperformancewhileanerrorisinthelevelofcompetence.Putitanotherway,amistakereflectsaperson’sshortageofattention,whereasanerrorreflectsaperson’sshortageofknowledge.

Basedonthecharacteristicsaboveabouterrorsandmistakes,errorsbecomeanobjectofstudyinresearchers’favor.Nowthaterrorsoccupyanimportantpositioninthefieldofsecondlanguageacquisition,manyresearchersvoicetheirownopinionsaboutthem.From1950sto1970s,thereappearedtwomajortheorieswhichcalledContrastiveAnalysisandErrorAnalysis.
2.2ContrastiveAnalysisandErrorAnalysis
Takingaccountofthephenomenonthathowtheerrorsaremadebysecondlanguagelearners,thereappearedtwoacademicschoolsinsequence.
ContrastiveAnalysisisthestudywiththeperspectivetodistinctlanguages’structuraldifferencesandsimilaritieswhichheldadominantpositionfromthe1950sto1960s.Thistheorybelievedthatalmosteverysecondlanguagelearners’errorshouldduetothefirstlanguage’s“interference”.Accordingtothetheory,welearnthatafactorcallednegativetransferhasbadeffectonnewlanguage’slearning.Forinstance,learner’smothertonguecouldlowertheeffectoftargetlanguage.
However,theclaimcouldn’tbesupportedbypracticalevidenceinthe1970s.AndsomepeoplefoundoutthatmorethanoneerrorpredictedbyContrastiveAnalysiswereimplicit.So,ContrastiveAnalysisgrewtobeoutofpeople’sfavor.Meanwhile,anothertheorycalledErrorAnalysisbecamepopular.
ThemainviewpointofErrorAnalysisisthaterrorsmadeofsecondlanguagelearnersweren’tcausedbymothertonguebutbyincorrectlearningstrategies.AndErrorAnalysisstillplaysasignificantrolenowadays.

2.3InterlanguageTheory
Theterm“interlanguage”wascreatedbyLarrySelinker(1972).Itreferstoalanguagewhichisdevelopedbythelearnerofasecondlanguagewhohasn’tbeenspecializedinyet,butismerelyneartothetargetlanguage.
Interlanguagepragmaticsisoneofbranchesofpragmaticswhichresearchespeople’sspeechact..Andthepragmatictransferisthemainresearchobjectofit.Intermsoftheeffectoftransference,pragmatictransfercouldalsobedividedintwoparts.Onepartiscalledpositivepragmatictransfer,andtheotherpartiscallednegativepragmatictransferwhichcoulddirectlyleadtopragmaticfailure.
