Unit1
Usingfirstnames,orgivennames,iscommonamongstudentsinEnglish-speaking
countries.Noticethattheirteacher,incontrast,isnotintroducedbyherfirstname.The
preferredtitleforfemaleteachersandprofessorsisMs.plusalastname(familyname),
andMr.plusalastnameformen.SomewomenstillusetheolderformsofMrs.orMiss,
formarriedorunmarriedwomen,respectively.
Theterm“lastname”causesconfusionforsomepeople,suchasKoreanorChinese
peoplewhosefamilynameisusuallygivenfirst,orforSpanishspeakerswhousually
havemorethanonefamilyname.

Familiesinmanycountrieshavebecomemuchmorevariedthantheyusedtobe,anditis
notunusualtofindfamilieswithonlyoneparent,or“blendedfamilies”whichinclude
step-parentsandstep-siblings.Manyfamiliesalsoincludemembersofdifferentracesor
differentculturalbackgrounds.Teachersmaywanttobepreparedtodiscusssomeofthis
diversitywiththeirstudents.

shoppingmalls.Someoftheattractionsofafoodcourtarelowprice,fastservice,and
variety–eachpersoninagroupcandecidetobuyfoodfromadifferentcountryandthey
canstillsitdowntogethertoeat.

Thepriceofclothinginmoststoresisclearlyindicatedwithapricetagattachedtothe
item,butifapieceofclothinghasnopricetag,it’sfinetoaskthesalesclerkaboutthe
price.Usuallythepriceisnotnegotiable.
A“sale”isawaytoattractcustomersbyofferingreducedprices,anditemswhoseprices
havebeen“markeddown”aresaidtobe“onsale”.

ThenamesofmonthsarealwayscapitalizedinEnglish,andordinalnumbers(first,
second,third)areusedtogivedates,suchasthefifteenthofJuly,orJulyfifteenth.

ExtracurricularactivitiesareacommonpartoflifeforAmericanstudentsinmiddle
schoolandhighschool.Thestudentssometimesbelongtoseveraldifferentclubs,and
