Thispaperwillarguethatusinganthropologicalmethodologiessuchasplacingpeopleandtheir‘stuff’(Miller)asthefocusoftheInteriorDesignandArchitecturalprocess,willcreatemoreemotionallydurablenewhomesforpeopletolivein.CurrentlyintheUK,newhomebuildingisapriorityasdemandvastlyoutstripssupply.ThispaperwillarguethelongreveredLeCorbusiermantrathatresidentialbuildingsare‘machinesforliving’isnowdefunctandamoresociallyawareandinclusiveprocessisneededtoensurethewell-beingofnewinhabitantsandaidtheestablishmentandlongevityofcommunitiesinhighdensitycityareas.
Specifically,thispaperwillfocusonInteriorDesignprocessasthemediumbywhichinstitutionalarchitectureanddetachedoccupantscanconciliate.ThepapertakesasitsprimarycasestudyaresearchprojectconductedwithfirstyearundergraduatestudentswhoweremovingtoUniversityaccommodationastheirfirst‘homeawayfromhome’(Cieraad).Itdisclosestheeffortsanddilemmasnewoccupantsofpurposebuiltinstitutionalaccommodationfaceintheirendeavourstomakea‘home’andestablishacommunityforthefirsttime.Itcomparestheexperiencesofthesestudentstothoselivinginotherinstitutionalplacessuchascouncilestatesorprisons(Clarke,Milleretal).Drawingonthesefindings,itsuggeststhatdesigninginteriorspaceswithpeopleandtheirpossessionsiskeytoestablishingharmoniouscommunitiesandbetterrelationshipsbetweenoccupantandlandlord.
HavingworkedasprofessionalInteriorDesignerfor17years,howpeopleoccupyspaceisattheforefrontofmydesignprocess.Indeed,tomystudentsIdescribeInteriorDesignastheremodellingofexistingspaces,howtheyareoccupied,usedandultimatelyexperiencedbypeople.However,workinginthecommercialrealmforlargebrandsanddevelopers,Iwasconsciousthisprocesswasnotalwaysthepriorityforpayingclients,whereefficiencies,budgetandprofitspacetookprecedence.
AsIrepositionedmycareerinacademia,myfocuscamebacktopeople,occupationandspaceandIwasdeterminedtoworkinamorephilosophicalandcompassionatemanner.Atthistime,IboughtaderelicthouseinaSouthManchestersuburb,whichmyArchitecthusbandandwesetaboutdesigningandrenovatingwhatwouldbecomethefamilyhomeforourtwoyoungboys.Theobsessionwithhomeowningandmakingour‘castle’seemstobeaparticularlyBritishphenomenon,butasadesignerandarchitect,ourmodernistfantasieswhereplayedouttothefull,makingouraspirationaland,perhaps,archetypical‘whiteandglassbox’tolivein.
FastforwardafewyearstomyannualtriptoNorthernIreland,whichiswhatculturalanthropologistIreneCieraadwoulddescribeasmy‘homehome’.Mythen94yearoldGrannyhaddecidedshewouldprobablybedeadbythenexttimeIcame‘homehome’andsheneededtopassonsomeofherworldlypossessions.Abroach,ablownglassvaseandacollectionofplatestostartwith,thenmorejewellery,crockeryandornamentsfollowed.IntrueGrannyfashion,shewasofcoursestillaliveandkickingbymynextvisitandthenextafterthat,andsoon,andastimeworeonIgainedagrowingcollectionofherpossessionsinmyhome;noneofwhichweretomytaste,orweresympathetictotheaestheticsofthewhiteandglassboxwenowlivein.
Andsomydilemmawasborn;whattodowithGranny’sstuff,thatholdssomuchsentimentalvalueandstoriesofmy‘homehome’,butdoesn’taestheticallyorphysically‘fit’themodern,functionallyefficientandaspirationalhomeIhavedesigned?
Inobservingandcontemplatingthis,IbegantoquestionmyprocessasadesignerandthepriorityorderbywhichIdesigned.
ThemodernistarchitectLeCorbusierwouldcallourhome‘AMachineforLiving’andtheemotionalattachmenttoGranny’sstuff‘acrime’.However,theanthropologistDanielMillerwouldcallGranny’sstuff‘ghosts’,withreferencetoheirloomswecollectorthebuildingweoccupy,asagenciesthathauntandunconsciouslyshapeourdomesticenvironment.ItintriguedmeasadesignerthatIhadn’tacknowledged,oryetknown,aboutthese‘ghosts’.MyArtSchooltrainingandcommercialpractiseexperiencehadn’tpreparedmeforsuchhauntings.The‘ghost’authorityofmodernistarchitecture,the‘ghost’ofgranny’sstuff,andasmychildrengrow,the‘ghosts’ofthesentimentalstufftheygeneratetoo.Ultimately,thesewerenon-functionalpossessionsbuttheysomehowturnedourhouseintoahome.Itbotheredmethatinthedesignprocess,Ihadconsideredhowmyfamilywouldfunctionallyoccupyourhomebutitdidn’toccurtomehowwewould‘emotionallyoccupy’it.By‘emotionallyoccupy’Imeanmakingaplaceforeverydayobjectsandpossessionsthatdon’thaveafunctionorusebutwecan’tpartwith;thestuffthatidentifieswholivesthereandprovidesanarrativeofourlives.Thestuffthatprovidescomfortandmakesushappy.BackatUniversity,IhadbeenaskedtocommentontheinteriorsfornewstudentaccommodationatManchesterMetropolitanUniversity’sBirleyFieldscampus.
TheUniversity’scontractorwaslookingforwaystoreachitsBREEAMtargetsandwantedfeedbackonwhetherthestudents’interiorenvironment,inparticularthecolourandfurnishings,wouldaffecthowsustainablytheywouldusethebuilding.Inshort,theywantedtoknowifasetofredcurtainsorredpaintedwallsinthelivingspaceswouldmakethestudentsfeelwarmandthereforenotturntheheatingon.Havingfailedtofindanyquantifiableacademicresearchonthistopic,IthoughtbacktomyownhomeandtheobservationsIwasmakingabouthowIlivedviamydesignprocess;IimmediatelyknewtheissuesweremorecomplexandofcoursetheUniversities‘redcurtain’theoryratherspurious.Everypersonisdifferentandwillhavedifferentresponsestoanenvironment,determinedbyanynumberoffactorssuchasclass,culture,gender,environment,moodorevenwhatthehadforbreakfastthatday!
Ispentsometimeintheproposedstudentaccommodation(whichatthattimewasamereshell)withmembersofResidentialServiceswhomanagetheHallsandIwasdrawntotheblankidentikitboxesthestudentswouldbeprovidedwithtolivein.
The‘ghost’authorityoftheUniversityandthearchitectwherepalpable,whitewallsandglass,orderandinstitution.TheHallsweretobemanagedbyveryspecificrulesaboutwhatfurniturestudentscouldorcouldnothaveintheirroom;auniversitystandarddesk,yes,postersonwalls,no,andwhattheycouldorcouldnotbringwiththem.WhilstthiswouldallowtheUniversitytoruntheHallssafely,efficientlyandwithcontrol,Ifoundmyselfaskinghowthestudentswouldsuccessfullymakethesespacestheirhomewithsuchlimitations?
Iwonderedhowtheywouldmakedecisionsaboutwhat‘things’theyweretobringwiththemandwhatwasleftbehind?
Whatplaceandspaceistherefortheirpossessionsand‘stuff’?
AsIhaddiscoveredmyself,ifourstuffprovidescomfortandhappiness,howmightalackofitaffectthestudents’experience,successandimportantly,well-beingwhilstatUniversity?
AccordingtotheTimesHigherEducation,thedropoutratebeforethe2ndyrofuniversityhasincreasedforthesecondyearinarow1,mentalhealthissuesarerisingsteeplyandwiththat,suicidetoo.Itmademeconsiderhowastudents’emotiverelationshipwiththeirenvironmentcouldhavemoreseriousconsequences.
Ialsospeculatedthatwithsuchevident‘ghostauthority’intheHallsofResidence,howcouldstudentssuccessfullymaketheir‘homeawayfromhome’whenthey,asoccupants,wereinvisibletothosemakingthespaces.Thisnotionlikenedthedesignofstudentaccommodationtothatofcouncilestates,hospitals,prisonsorasylumcentres,wherebytheoccupierrarelyhasavoiceinthephysicaldesignandarrangementoftheirinteriorenvironment,itbeingalreadypredeterminedbyadesigner,architectorotherauthority,withdifferentmotivations
Millerrecognisedthetensionthatcanbecreatedinthedomesticenvironmentandtheimpactonrelationshipsbetweenidentity,spaceandobject.Forexample,whilestudyingtheoccupantsofcouncilhousing,heidentifiedthatlivingwithsuch‘ghostauthorities’couldleadtofeelingsoffrustration,alienationandanimosityamongstinhabitants.(2001)Soifweviewthedesignofstudentaccommodationandsocialhousingassimilarentities,itbecomesclearthatthesearenotideallivingquartersfor1styrundergradstudentswhowouldbedealingwiththemanynewchallengesofUniversitylife,frommakingfriendsandfindingtheirfeetsocially,topressuresoffees,financesand‘doingwell’.
SuchpersonalcomplexitieswereneverconsideredinLeCorbusier’sMachine’sforLivingbecause,Iwouldargue,theymightputaspannerintheworks…
ThePackingProject
Idecidedtousepurelyanthropologicalandsociologicalmethodologiestoinformmyultimatedesigndecisionmakingprocesstotrytorevealthesubtleties,nuancesandtensionsofsharedliving.
Withtheintentofusingfocusgroups,IsetupthePackingProjectasameanstoattractprospectivestudentparticipantstotheprojectviasocialmediaandthen,onceafocusgrouphadbeenestablished,employculturalprobesasatooltogathertangiblematerial,withwhichtomakebetterinformedinteriordesignresponses.
