TheDCgenerationsystemsuppliesanominal28vdctodifferentloads.ThepowersourcefortheDCsystemisusuallytheACsystem.ThebatterysuppliespoweriftheACsystemisnotavailable.
TransformerRectifierUnits
TocreateDCpowerfromthenormalACsource,theDCsystemusestransformer-rectifierunits(TRUs).ThethreeTRUstake115vac,decreasethevoltage(transforms),andrectifyittoanominal28vdc.
BatteryChargers
ThemainbatterychargerandauxiliarybatterychargergiveaDCvoltageoutputtochargetheirrespectivebattery.EachchargeroperateslikeaTRUafterthebatterygetstofullcharge.ThemainbatterychargersendsaconstantDCvoltagetothebatteryandthehotandswitchedhotbatterybuses.TheauxiliarybatteryandauxiliarybatterychargerpowerDCbusesonlyduringnon-normalconditions.Seethestandbypowersystemsectionformoreinformation.(AMMPARTI24-34)
Batteries
Eachbatteryisa48ampere-hour,nominal24vdcpowersource.ThemainbatterysuppliespowerforAPUstartingandisastandbypowersourceifallotherpowersuppliesdonotoperate.Theauxiliarybatteryhelpsthemainbatterysupplystandbypoweronly.
ControlandProtection
Thestandbypowercontrolunit(SPCU),thebatteryswitch,andthestandbypowerswitchgiveprimarycontroloftheDCsystem.
ThebatteryswitchandthestandbypowerswitchgivemanualcontrolofpowertosomeDCbuses.TheSPCUgivesautomaticcontrolandprotectionofDCbuses.ItusesinputsfromtheflightcompartmentandsystemmonitoringtocontrolDCpowersourcesanddistribution.
PowerDistribution
TheDCpowerdistributionsystemisinthepower
distributionpanels(PDPs)andintheSPCU.

Purpose
Themainbatterychargerhasthesetwofunctions:
-Keepsmainbatteryatmaximumcharge
-SuppliesDCpowertothebatterybuses.
Theauxiliarybatterychargerkeepstheauxiliarybatteryatmaximumcharge.
GeneralDescription
Bothbatterychargershavethesamepartnumber.Eachbatterychargerhasthesetwobasicmodesofoperation:
-Batterychargemode(constantcurrent)
-Transformerrectifiermode(constantvoltage).
Eachbatterychargersuppliesconstantcurrent,variablevoltagepowerinthebatterychargemode.Thebatterychargeroverchargesthebattery.Thebatterychargerlogiccalculatestheamountofovercharge.Thetotalchargetimeislessthan75minutes.
Inthetransformerrectifier(TR)mode,themainbatterychargersuppliesconstantvoltageDCpowertothehotbatterybusandtheswitchedhotbatterybus.
Themainbatteryalsoreceivesasmalltricklechargetohelpkeepitatmaximumcharge.TheauxiliarybatterychargerdoesnotsupplypowertotheDCbusesineithermode.However,theauxiliarybatteryreceivesasmalltricklechargewhentheauxiliarybatterychargerisintheTRmode.
Thefrontfaceofeachbatterychargerhastwogreenstatuslights(LED).Onelightisforthebatterychargerandtheotherisforthebattery.Theselightsareonwhenthebatteryandbatterychargerareinoperation.

FunctionalDescription
Eachbatterychargertakesthree-phase,115vacpowerandchangesittoDCpower.Usually,eachbatterychargerisinthetransformerrectifiermode.Thebatterychargerssupplyaconstantvoltageoutputinthismode.Eachchargercansupplyupto65ampsinthismode.
Abatterychargergoestothechargemodewhenitsbatteryvoltageislessthan23vdc.Inthismode,thechargersuppliesconstantcurrentpower.Theoutputvoltageisvariable.Duringthecharge,thebatteryvoltagerisesuntilthevoltagegetstotheinflectionpoint.Thechargerlogicusesthebatterytemperatureatthestartofchargingtocalculatetheinflectionpoint.Thechargerlogicthencalculatesthelengthoftheoverchargeperiod.
Aftertheoverchargeperiod,thechargergoesintoatransformerrectifiermodewithaconstant27.5vdcoutput.Thebatterygetsatricklechargeinthismode.
Thebatterychargergoesintothechargemodeagainifanyoftheseoccur:

Bothstatuslightsareusuallyonwhenthebatterychargerhasinputpower.Amalfunctionwithanyofthesecomponentsmakesoneorbothstatuslightsgooff:

-Connectionwiring.
Bothstatuslightsareoffifanyoftheseconditionsaretrue:
-Inputpowertothebatterychargergoesaway
-Inputvoltagetothebatterychargerislessthan94vacformorethan0.5seconds.
Thebatterychargerstatuslightisonandthebatterystatuslightisoffifanyoftheseconditionsaretrue:

Location
ThebatteriesareintheEEcompartment,undertheE3rack.Theauxiliarybatteryisforwardofthemainbattery.Youremoveanaccesspanelintheforwardcargocompartmenttogetaccesstothebatteries.Youmustremovethemainbatterybeforeyoucanremovetheauxiliarybattery.
GeneralDescription
Eachbatteryisa20cellnickel-cadmiumbatterywitha48amp-hourcapacity.Withfullcharge,thebatteriessupplyaminimumof60minutesofstandbyACandDCpower.
Eachbatteryhasaninternalthermalsensor.Thebattery'schargerusesthissensortomeasureinternalbatterytemperature.SeetheMAINBATTERYCHARGERANDAUXILIARYBATTERYCHARGERpageinthissectionformoreinformation.
Indication
Youcanseetheoutputofeachbatteryontheelectricalmeters,batteryandgalleypowermoduleontheP5forwardoverheadpanel.YouseethevoltageandcurrentoutputofabatterywiththeDCmeterselectorintheBATpositionorAUXBATposition.Ifthebattery'schargerhaspower,youseetheoutputvoltageofthebatteryoritsbatterycharger,whicheverismore.
