形容词是英语词汇中较大的开放性词类。
掌握其分类,对提高学习兴趣,正确地驾驭语言具有重要意义。
Ⅰ.就其词形结构而言,形容词可分为单字形容词和复合形容词。
单字形容词有不带词缀的如big,small,good,hard,有带前缀或后缀的如:
dislogal,impossible,unkind;beautiful,voiceless,bloody;unthinkable,monolingual等。
复合形容词的构成是多种多样的,如:
形容词+形容词:
bitter-sweet,deaf-mute;
形容词/副词+ing分词:
good-looking,easy-going;
形容词/副词+ed分词:
newly-built,well-meant;
名词+形容词:
grassgreendutyfree;
名词+ing分词:
law-abiding,mouth-watering;
名词+ed分词:
hand-made,sun-burnt;
形容词+名词+ed:
king-hearted,absent-minded;
Ⅱ.就其句法功能而言,形容词可分为中心形容词(CentralAdjective)和外围形容词(PeripheralAdjective)。
例如:
Greenapplesaresour./Pillar-boxsaregreen/Theyhavepaintedthewindowsgreen.(这三个句子中“Green”分别充当修饰语,主补和宾补,为中心形容词,而在Thisisutternonsense中,utter只能做修饰语,不能做主补,即不能说※Thenonsenseinutter;在Thischildisasleep中,asleep只能做主补,不能做修饰语,即不能说※Thisisanasleepchild。
Ⅲ.就其词汇意义而言,形容词可分为静态形容词(StativeAdj.如tall,bigshort,small,shallow,deep,ugly,beautiful等)和动态形容词(DynamicAdj.,如witty,patient,generous等)两者有以下区别意义:
1动态形容词可与系动词be的进行体搭配作补语,而静态形容词不可。
如可以说Sheisbeingwitty;而不可以说※Sheisbeingbeautiful。
2动态形容词可用于以动词be开首的祈使句,而静态形容词不可。
如可以说,Bepatient!
Becareful!
不可以说※Betall!
※Besmall!
3动态形容词可用于使役结构,而静态形容词不可。
如可以说Ipersuadedhertobegenerous,但不可以说:
Ipersuadedhertobebeautiful。
Ⅳ.形容词的比较级和最高级规则变化:
1.一般在词尾加-er和–est
2.重读闭音节词尾只有一个辅音字母,应该双写辅音字母再加-er–est
3.以“辅音字母+y”结尾的双音节词,先改“y”为“i”再加-er,-est
4.以-er、-ow,结尾的双音节词,再词尾加-er、-est
5.以-ble,-ple结尾的双音节词,在词尾加-r,-st
6.多音节词和部分双音节词前加more,most
Ⅴ.形容词的用法,比较级和最高级的不规则变化:
少数形容词的比较级和最高级的变化是不规则的。
例如:
good-better-bestwell-better-best
bad-worse-worstmany-more-most
much-more-mostlittle-less-least
far-farther-farthestfar-further-furthest
副词主要用来修饰动词,形容词,副词或其他结构。
一、副词的位置:
1)在动词之前。
2)在be动词、助动词之后。
3)多个助动词时,副词一般放在第一个助动词后。
注意:
a.大多数方式副词位于句尾,但宾语过长,副词可以提前,以使句子平衡。
Wecouldseeveryclearlyastrangelightaheadofus.
b.方式副词well,badly糟、坏,hard等只放在句尾。
HespeaksEnglishwell.
二、副词的排列顺序:
1)时间,地点副词,小单位的在前,大单位在后。
2)方式副词,短的在前,长的在后,并用and或but等连词连接。
Pleasewriteslowlyandcarefully.
3)多个不同副词排列:
程度+地点+方式+时间副词。
注意:
副词very可以修饰形容词,但不能修饰动词。
改错:
(错) IverylikeEnglish.
(对) IlikeEnglishverymuch.
注意:
副词enough要放在形容词的后面,形容词enough放在名词前后都可。
