Abouttheauthor:
JaneAustenwasamajorEnglishnovelist,whowasbornon16December,1775,attherectoryinthevillageofSteventon,nearBasingstoke,inHampshire.Shewastheseventhofeightchildrenandwaseducatedmainlyathomeandneverlivedapartfromherfamily.
ShehadahappychildhoodamongstallherbrothersandtheotherboyswholodgedwiththefamilyandwhomMr.Austentutored.Fromheroldsister,Cassandra,shewasinseparable.Toamusethemselves,thechildrenwroteandperformedplaysandcharades,andevenasalittlegirlJanewasencouragedtowrite.Thereadingthatshedidofthebooksinherfather’sextensivelibraryprovidedmaterialfortheshort
satiricalsketchesshewroteasagirl.
Attheageof14shewroteherfirstnovel,LoveandFriendshipandthenA
HistoryofEnglandbyapartial,prejudicedandignorantHistirian,togetherwithother
veryamusingJuvenilia.InhertwentiesJaneAustenwrotethenovelsthatwerelatertobere-workedandpublishedasSenseandSensibility,PrideandPrejudice,and
NorthangerAbbey.Afterherfather’sdeathin1805,theyallsufferedfinancial
difficultiesandwereforcedtorelyonthecharityoftheAustensons.Itwasalsoatthattime,whileonholidayintheWestcountry,Janefellinlove,andwhentheyoungmandied,shewasdeeplyupset.LatersheacceptedaproposalofmarriagefromHarrisBigg-Wither,awealthylandownerandbrothertosomeofherclosestfriends,butshechangedhermindthenextmorningandwasgreatlyupsetbythewholeepisode.Shenevermarried.
Then,inJuly,1809,herbrotherEdwardofferedhismotherandsistersapermanenthomeonhisChawtonestate,whichwasasmallbutcomfortablehousethatJaneAustenneededinordertowrite.Inthesevenandahalfyearsthatshelivedinthishouse,sherevisedSenseandSensibilityandPrideandPrejudicedandpublished
them(in1811and1813)andthenembarkedonaperiodofintenseproductivity.MansfiledParkcameoutin1814,followedbyEmmain1816andshecompleted
Persuasion(whichwaspublishedtogetherwithNorthangerAbbeyin1818,theyear
afterherdeath).Noneofthebookspublishedinherlife-timehadhernameonthem---theyweredescribedasbeingwritten“ByaLady”.
Inthewinterof1816shestartedSanditon,butillnesspreventeditscompletion.
JaneAustenhadcontractedAddisonsDisease,atuberculardiseaseofthekidneys.ByMay1817shewassoillthatsheandhersister,Cassandra,livingnearJane’s
physician,rentingroomsinWinchester.Tragically,therewasnocureandJanediedinhersister’sarmsintheearlyhoursof18July,1817.Shewas41yearsold.SheisburiedinWinchesterCathedral.
JaneAusten’sapparentreticenceinmattersofcontemporarypoliticshasoften
thprovokedcommentfromcritics.HerwritingstylestructuredEnglishliteratureof18
thcenturyneoclassicismand19centuryromanticism.
Aboutthenovel:
Emmaisessentiallyacomedyofmanners,aworkinwhichthecharactersmoveinsideahighlyrestrictivecodeofconductandmustwalkafinelinebetweenthesociallyacceptableandunacceptableiftheyaretosurvive.Butatthesametimethecentralcharacter,EmmaWoodhouse,isamarkeddeparture.Austeniswritingveryclosetothepeakofherpowers,andheramazingtalentforobservation,subtleirony,andflashingwitendowEmmawithtremendouscharmandinterest.
OfallJaneAusten’sheroines,EmmaWoodhouseisthemostflawed,themost
infuriating,and,intheend,themostendearing.
Thecharactersinthenovel:
EmmaWoodhouse,themaincharacter.Sheis21yearsold.Ononehand,shewasbeautiful,kindheartedandclever,ontheotherhand,shewasselfish,pamperandsubjective.Sheswearedthatshewillnotbemarried,heraimistohelpotherstofindtheirlovers.Butattheendofthenovel,sherealizedthatshehadfalleninlovewithhergoodfriend,MrKnightley,whoalwaysstayedwithherandhelpedherquietly.
MrGeorgeKnightley,37yearsold.Hewasasinglegentlemanwhowasserious
butfilledwithreason.HewasamongthefewpeoplewhocanseeandpointoutEmma’sshortcomings.Emmaoftencinsideredhimasastandardtomeasureothermen.AndthemostimportantwasthathewasinlovewithEmmacontinuously.
MrFrankChurchill,ayounggentlemanwhoattractedalmosteverypersonwhoknowshim,peoplenotonlylikehimbutalsoadmiredhim.Helikessinginganddancing.Thoughhewasborninarichfamily,healsohasagoodtemper.HeandEmmawereofequalpositiononthescale,thetwofamilieswereofequalrank.ButMrKnightleydidnotlikehimbecausehethoughthewastooyoungandwasnotmatureenough.
