Ingeneral,giftedstudentstendtohaveaninsatiableappetiteforinformation.Theyarealsoperfectionists.Inaddition,mostareindependentandsensitivetoinjustice.Othercharacteristicsincludespecificabilityinoneareaalongwiththeabilitytoconcentrateonitforalongtime,excellentreadingability,alargevocabulary,originality,rapidmasteryofnewskills,andanabilitytoseeconnectionsbetweenideas.
Havingthesecharacteristicscanbechallenging,evendepressing,saidCharbonneau.Heiscriticalofevenhisbestperformances.“I’mrarelyeverhappywithwhatIdo.”
Charbonneauknowsthatthepressureonhimwillsoonbegintogrow,aseveryyoungchessplayertriestobecomethenextchampion.Thatpressurehasdestroyedalotoftalentedyoungpeople.Forexample,manyyoungmusicalprodigieshavewalkedawayfromtheircareersafterdiscoveringtheywillnotbecomethestaroftheirdreams,saysFrancoysGagné,anexpertongiftedchildrenattheUniversityofQuebecatMontreal,Canada.“Whenyouareaprodigy,yourgoalistobecomeaninternationalmastermusician,”hesaid.“Ifyoucannotbecomesomeoneattheverytop,youarenotinterestedinbecomingamusicianinanorchestra.”
World-famousviolinistItzhakPerlmanhasseenmanytalentedyoungmusicianssimplyburnout.“Rarelydoyouseepeoplesurvive,andthat’sthegoal,tosurviveyourgift,”heoncetoldtheNewYorkTimes.
Between2and5percentofyoungpeoplearegifted,twotothreeyearsbeyondtheirpeers.Butextremelygiftedprodigies—theBeethovensandMozarts—aremuchlesscommon,perhapsoneinamillion,saidGagné.Herearesomefactsaboutseveralwell-knownchildprodigies:
● Probablythemostfamouschildprodigyofall,WolfgangMozart(1756-1791)beganwritingmusicbeforehewasfive.Bytheageofsix,hehadwrittenaremarkableamountofmusicandperformedthroughoutEurope.
● SomeofLudwigvanBeethoven’s(1770-1827)musicwaspublishedwhenhewasonlytwelve.Despitelosinghishearingasanadult,hecontinuedtowritemusicuntilhisdeat.
● ItisoftensaidthatthegreatscientistAlbertEinstein(1879-1955)failedatschool.Infact,hedidwellandcouldbedescribedasaprodigy.Einsteinwasalwaysahighachiever,althoughhisbestworkwasdonewhenhewasinhistwenties.
